METV application from Vietnam (HCMC) — onward ticket question

I’m a Canadian currently in Vietnam and I’m applying for a Thai Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) through the eVisa website.

I keep seeing people say you need to show a flight out of Thailand within 60 days, and some say you also need proof of a flight back into Thailand.

But when I go through the actual eVisa application, I don’t see anywhere that specifically asks for an onward flight within 60 days.

For anyone who has actually applied for an METV from Vietnam recently (2026):

I stay with my wife while in Thailand and travel to Vietnam quite regularly. I’m not interested in the Non-O, so no need to suggest that visa.

Did you have to provide an onward/exit flight within 60 days?

And did you have to show a second flight returning to Thailand?

In the travel confirmation field I uploaded a pdf of my flights from Thailand to Vietnam and the return flight back to Thailand.

Or did the consulate accept the application without those?

I’m looking for recent first-hand experiences from people applying in Vietnam, rather than general visa advice from other countries. Thanks!
Answer summary
A Canadian expat currently in Vietnam is applying for a Thai Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) and seeks clarity on whether an onward flight out of Thailand is required. Participants discuss the implications of showing a flight within the initial 60-day stay, potential airline demands for onward travel proof, and the advantages of providing comprehensive documentation to avoid complications during the visa application process. Answers suggest that while there's no explicit request for an onward flight in the eVisa application, having proof may facilitate smoother entry at the airport.

Thailand Immigration Officers at the border (eg. bangkok airport) have the right to ask you to show an onward journey (if your METV is fixed for -days), but airlines might ask the same question at check-in or they will not permit boarding - because they have to transport you back and maybe fined if not allowed in. Generally, you would only need to show your first intended exit/onward journey. This was required even using the old paper applications and passport visa stickers systems.

Roger Mcintyre I’m aware of all that. I was specifically asking about the visa. Thanks though.

Ci Rob that’s the plan now. I’m going to have everything done and send it all to them. Don’t want to give them a reason to ask for any further information. Thanks b

Typically you show your initial flight into Thailand and a flight out within the time you're initially stamped in for which is 60 days and then a return trip to Thailand sometime after that. Without demonstrating proof of need you're only going to get a single entry tourist visa.

You cannot stay Thailand forever on repeated METV. IM will not accept repeated METVs as a "trick" to stay Thailand without showing larger money.

OP
Henrik JN where did I say I was trying to stay in Thailand forever on the METV??

I’m simply asking about the flights in and out of the country for the METV.

CopperFlamingo7900, I was just reflecting on staying with your wife and avoiding a "marriage visa" (Non-O).

Just don’t tell them you have a Thai wife and book an exit ticket, TDAC and also at least a day of hotel booking, this should be enough to get the entry

that’s what I’m thinking. Probably best to not even mention her.

You say you're not interested in a Non O but you need to be careful entering Thailand any other way. Do not tell immigration that you are visiting your wife - you are not classed as a tourist so any visa issued for tourism purposes is the wrong visa. You are unlikely to be denied entry but if you are questioned and admit that you are visiting your wife, you are very likely to be formally warned and told to get a visa next time - if not you will be denied. This is not my opinion, it was told to both me and a friend by an immigration officer at the airport. We had both previously had Non O visas but as multiple entry Non O's got more difficult to obtain we opted to use exempt entries. You'd have to be unlucky for the above to happen but it can so don't say "I'm visiting my wife" if you're asked. If they issue you with a warning, you won't be entering again without a Non O unless you can show them a divorce certificate. I recently obtained a Non O based on marriage and it was very easy to get but I accept that having to show 400k in the bank is a bit much for a short visit - I don't think they thought that through when they stopped issuing Multi Entry Non O's completely. In addition, I didn't have to show any flight bookings or accommodation details. I just gave flight numbers and my home address in Thailand.

OP
Phil Wilson I use to love those ME Non-O visas. I use to enter Thailand all the time with them.

Why can’t I be a tourist and still visit my wife while I’m there? I’ve been entering with the visa exempt ever since they’ve got rid of the ME Non-O. Did the 30 day extensions and the 60 day extensions. Never a single question asked.

Back on topic here though. I’m more concerned about what I should do for the application for the METV. Entering and leaving proof.

My wife will be writing the invitation letter as I will be staying at her condo while I’m there.

So, if I’m reading you correctly, it’s ok to mention to them about my wife when I apply for the visa but not to say anything when I go through immigration at the airport.

"Why can't I be a tourist and still visit my wife" - you're asking the wrong person. I only posted what both I and a friend were told a few years back. I used to get Multi Entry Non O's from Hull then London in the UK + a couple from Ho Chi Minh and Savannakhet but they became more and more difficult. As far as I know both Ho Chi Minh and Savannakhet still issue 90 day Non O's but I believe you still have to show 400k. "So if I'm reading you correctly".............No, based on what we were told, you should not mention that you are married at all if you are applying for any form of tourist visa. They do not class you as a tourist. Remember, your application may be for an e-visa but its is still decided by embassy staff. I'll just quote you what I was told by an I.O. at the airport - After I was warned, I did indeed get a new Non O however, during the process I noticed that the on the London Thai Embassy's website they stated that a tourist visa was suitable for a short visit to a Thai spouse or family. When I next entered on my Non O I mentioned this to the I.O. upon entry as a tourist visa was cheaper. I can't remember his exact words but he laughingly said something like "they are an embassy sir, they don't decide whether you can come in or not, we do".

Phil Wilson, true, the Embassies provide a lot of rubbish information. The Embassies are governed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the immigrations are ruled by the Immigration Bureau (IB). IB wins.

One question: Can I apply for a multiple-entry METV visa at any Thai consulate? Not just the Thai consulate in my home country?

Pretty sure that’s not true, METV you usually need to apply from your country of residence

Vietnam and i believe Laos are the exceptions

They could ask you for proof of leaving if on travel booking confirmation you uploaded one way ticket to Thailand

I may just book a train ticket out of Thailand and attach it to the pdf. Just to be save. I don’t want to end up paying $200 USD for the METV and have them only issue me the SETV.

My plan is to do an extension to make it 90 days and then leave the country and return.

Thanks for your reply.
