Hi, I have American passport and 6 month METV issue by consulate in LA . I want to apply here in Chiang Mai for a Retirement Visa . I approached an agency for help and they say I must first change visa to a Non immigrate class visa first before I can move to Retirement Visa . Does that sound right ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To switch from a 6-month METV (Multi-Entry Tourist Visa) to a Retirement Visa in Thailand, you are required to first obtain a Non-Immigrant O visa. This involves applying for a 90-day Non-Immigrant O visa based on retirement eligibility, which requires meeting certain financial conditions. After obtaining this visa, you can then apply for a yearly extension of stay. Using an agency for this process may not be necessary, as it can be completed directly at the immigration office for a fraction of the cost.

, can a Filipino get a 90 day single entry Non-O based on being married to a person who has a yearly extension based on retirement in Vientiane without a police report or a medical certificate?

I'd wait until you wring as much time out of that 6 month METV as you could before I'd switch over.

From a tourist visa it's a two step process

FIRST You apply for a 90 day Non-O visa inside the country based on being over 50 (retirement) by meeting the financial requirements it costs 2000baht, It will go under consideration for 14 days, then you go back get the Non-O visa along with a new 90 day stamp inked into your passport.

Then when you have 45 days or less left on that you go back to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement). Again by meeting the financial requirements it costs 1900baht. They'll ink that into your passport the day you apply.

Afrer you get the year extension IF you want to get a re-entry permit you can get a single for 1000baht or a multiple for 3800 baht.

So the hard costs at the immigration office going from a tourist visa to a yearly extension of stay with a multiple re-entry permit would be 2000+1900+3800 or 7700 baht.

You certainly don't need an agency to "push paper" for you at the immigration office

Or as you suggested, get a 90 day Non-O in the US, come here and apply for the yearly extension and then buy a re-entry permit if you need to.

@Philip ********
everyone that stays longer than 90 days does 90 day reporting there's no way out of that.

The visa I suggested you get is only available from a thai consulate in the country your passport comes from. You need to get it before you come here, BUT it's a good visa and because every entry gets you stamped in for a whole new year, if you exit and re-enter just before the enter before date on the visa itself you get stamped in for another whole year. Which gives you almost 2 years of stay on a visa that was valid for a year.

so would do 90 day reporting but not have to do paperwork to leave and re enter each time I leave Thailand in the first year .

@Phi***
, You could do that but here's another idea.

When you're back in the US, apply for a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa from either Chicago, LA, New York or Washington DC (the only places that sell them now).

It does take a background check and a medical certificate But you can show the proof of finances in your account in the US.

That visa is good for unlimited entries for the validity of the visa itself (one year from the date it's issued) and every time you enter thailand you get stamped in for a completely NEW calendar year.

One more question , you guys are so help full . I will be heading back to us In Jan for family stuff . Am thinking at that time I could apply for single entry non immigrate O visa . $80 Then when I return go to immigration here to extend to a one year.
Steve *******
Yes, you need the non imm visa in order to apply for a yearly extention of stay based on being over 50
Robert *******
If you have minimum 15 days of stay left and meet the requirements you can visit with all the copies Immigration Office yourself and ask them to convert your reason of stay. They can give you a 90 Day Non Immigrant O visa, costs 2000 Thb and take about 15 days. You come back, get the visa stamped in passport and max 45 days before the permitted to stay date you can apply again for 1 year Extension of Stay based on Retirement.
