I can not tell what the Immigration officer decide, my advice, get the documents, apply for the Non Immigrant B visa and then make your way to Thailand.

To avoid the hassle you had last year after living inside Thailand using Visa Exempt Entry and Tourist Visa, you did take care this time.

What long time visa are you going to present to Immigration?

If your bags are booked through to Samui you do immigration in Bangkok when transferring

I recently flew to Krabi via Bangkok from the UK. It was one booking, my bag went straight onto Krabi, but I cleared immigration in BKK.

I'm assuming that things are the same as the last time I through checked (5 years ago).

If it's one ticket booked through, then the bags will also be checked through and you should clear at Samui.

If they're separate tickets, or the onward airline doesn't have an interline agreement, then you'll pick up your bags and do immigration in Bkk- then recheck your bags.
