Hello! My husband and I have a 1 year Retirement visa based on 65k monthly deposits. We renewed our visas in April 2026 and the next renewal will be in April 2027. We are considering to switch from the 65 k monthly deposits to the 800k money in the bank.

If we deposit the 800k now, can we stop bringing the monthly 65k at any time now and safely be able to renew our visa in April 2027?

Thank you for your answers!
Answer summary
A couple on a Retirement visa in Thailand is considering switching from the 65,000 baht monthly deposit method to an 800,000 baht bank deposit method. They have received mixed advice on whether they can stop the monthly transfers immediately after depositing the 800,000 baht and still qualify for their visa renewal in April 2027. Community members clarified that to switch methods, the 800,000 baht must remain in the bank for 2-3 months before the renewal, and recommend maintaining the monthly deposits until then. They also highlighted the complexities and possible discrepancies in immigration requirements based on different offices.

I would maintain the transfers through to your next extension whilst keeping the 800k in the Thai bank to be safe.

Robert Uhrich yes much much safer. two or three months just before extension to put 800K is total bullshit. I read some guys were rejected of extension by doing this way. two or three months before extension. they learned this way from here online and stupidly believed this much. And they really did this and rejected. And argued there with immigration officers. It is total their stupidity and problem. not mine at all. But the problem is, if there are more and more stupid foreigners do this way to extend, thai immigration can change the rules more tighter or more harder to all foreigners. Who likes stupid people???they fight everywhere. They still believe they are right and Thai immigration is wrong! How thai immigration officer can feel that foreigners?? and for them, all foreigners are the same.

If you have 800,000 thai baht in your thai bank 2 months before yo renew your visa next year you can stop the 65 000 thb transfers at any time.

Tim Wheeler noooooo!!! see a post here by a guy who was denied at immigration by done that way you said here, 2 months before the extension ( not the first extension!!!) You have to do two ways together for next extension. You put 800K in the first month when you extended. and keep it as ruled. while you do monthly income too. Then, at next year extension you satisfied two methods. monthly and deposit. you can choose what method you want for another year.

I just did this in Hua Hin and I was caught up in the corruption which is in the local Imm office here. I have renewed every year based on income and decided this year to go the 800k route. I transferred the money 6 months prior my renewal and thought this should be sufficient time since I also have heard 2 or 3 months before renewal. When I met up for my renewal they refused since last year was income and the 800k should have been there for 1 year, 800k for 3 months after renewal and 800k 2 months before and it should never drop below 400k in between. So I tried to argue that I changed now and put the money in well before 3 months prior renewal but to no awail. Ended up having to pay the dreadful corruption fee and still feeling I got cheated since it felt like the officer just made up a rule to be able to extort money. Well next year my money would have been sitting in the account for 1.5 years but I'm sure they will make up another rule to make some extortion that time too. This is the worst about living in Thailand imho ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

you got extension by monthly method for one year. so you want to change it to 800K deposit method for next extension. Then you need to continue monthly method till next extension and put 800K into your bank account at least two or three months before extension date. because you agreed to make monthly income in last extension. That is why you got extension by monthly method. So this agreement should keep till next extension ( so, 12 months) and put 800K in between, so you can fullfil two methods for next extension. PS) once you get extension by 800K THB method, you also agreed to keep your funds not below 400k etc,, such rules, so, for next extension, this rules should be also kept. this means, you are not allowed to withdraw 800K THB after extension. If you leave Thailand, you are not allowed to withdraw that all. Just keep for three months, no touch of your deposit and not below 400K and fill it up back to 800 K two or three months before extension. If you break this rules you agreed when you got extension, you can be deported, blacklisted. Be aware of this.

it's not going to make any difference to the answer in this case but it's always better to provide the full picture, your initial post said you were both on retirement visas (actually an extension of stay and not a visa) but you are on an extension being a dependant of your husband.

Anyway the plan for your husband seems sensible, just make sure you get the correct guarantee letter from your bank or they will extend based on the bank letter. The letters for the 800k method and the monthly income method differ from each other

OP
Thank you all for your answers!

My husband is the only one required to show the monthly deposits or the 800 k (I have a dependent visa because of him).

As the answers received are not very clear, we decided to continue with the 65k a month up until the renewal and 3 months before the renewal we are going to also have the 800k deposited.

We will try to renew based on the 800 k but if they give us any hard time, we will should still be able to get the renewal based on the monthly 65 k and then try again next year to switch to the 800 k.

We are not using agents, we did it all on our own from the beginning and I am not gonna go into details on why we think this switch might work better for us going forward... thanks! ๐Ÿ‘

Andreea Fahd don't forget to make a Thai Last Will, so the Wife can get access to the deposit if the husband passes away. Foreign wills are not valid in Thailand. And even when she presents the Thai Last Will, the wife would need a Thai Court order before she can take the money out of his account. And don't forget: if the husband passes away, the wife's current "dependent extension" would become void. At least that's my most recent information on this subject. To be 100% sure, you should ask your Immigration!

No, But speak to your local immigration office as each office has its own interpretation of the ruling.

But in general if you want to switch you have to finish this year with the international transfers (as this is what you used to get your last extension) AND show the 800.000 Baht in your bank account for your next extension.

You need to seek advice from your local immigration of to be clear.

You would most likely need to continue based on the method the extension was granted.

AND deposit the 800k

2 months before your next extension application.

This not the way it usually goes.

If you used an agent to do this originally, you likely will not be able to do on your own

Kari Syrjรค I do put more than 800K THB in my thai banks, while I am using monthly income method. The main reason is, sometimes it was not working to transfer from my foreign bank account to my thai bank account due to system error or security checks etc by the foreign banks. In this case, I have to fly to my foreign bank. It is really hassle and stress for me. This 800K THB is just for that cases. And maybe some people think to put 800K in thai bank is relaxed in mind, because no reason to transfer monthly to Thailand. however, putting 800K THB in Thai bank is pure financially not a good idea.

If you look at the reverse of your argument, moving from Bt65k to Bt800k on deposit, then you would need to keep to the rules for the Bt800k throughout the year in which you receive the visa.

This causes a potential problem moving from an agent fraud scheme to a legitimate Bt65k scheme as the agent fraud will not show the Bt800k as and when it was required.

As each immigration office makes up their own rules, I'd keep up the Bt65k until renewal and also have the Bt800k seasoned.

By the question surely is why do you want to have Bt1.6m locked up forever ?
Graham ******
Graham ******
Andy Johnston because it is not locked at 1.6M
Yo***
Yo***
Graham Seal it is locked. you do not touch it for three months after you extended. and you can use only half of that but return it 800K two or three months before your extension. And, if you have to leave Thailand for any reason, you can not withdraw it. because if you withdraw it 800K THB, you break the rule that you agreed when extended. So you overstayed and get deported and blacklisted. Remember you agreed and signed when you have extended. not to touch 800K for three months and must back 800K two or three months before extension date. it does not matter why you leave Thailand. you must keep this rule. So practically at least 400K THB is locked for the whole year.

As long as you have a minimum of 800k baht in your thai bank for 2 months (3 at some immigration offices) before you apply for your next extension of stay you should be able to stop the 65k transfers whenever you want to. Bear in mind that with the 800k method you must maintain that amount for 3 months after receiving the extension and can't drop below 400k at any point in the duration of the extension
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
have one question to you about the way you said above. what about this case. example, I extended based on 800K THB deposit today. 28. Aug. 2026. So my next extension is 28.Aug.2027. I got extension today. so I withdraw all this. and transfer 65K every month. So 12 months in total by next extension, I can get an extension based on monthly income method?
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
that would be highly unlikely because you haven't honoured the terms of your current extension. To honour those terms you need to keep your account over 800k for 3 months after you receive the extension and not let it drop below 400k at any point in the year. Once you get the next extension based on 12 months of transfers from overseas you can then withdraw the 400k
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
if you break the rules of the monthly income method you won't get an extension based on monthly income. As you need to match the rules in order to apply using monthly income you can't break them. I've no idea where your trying to go with this but it's getting boring
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
again. When next year extension, by doing monthly income method, I also satisfy that. but I just withdraw 800K THB. ( yes, I broke the rules of 800K deposit) but I satisfy the rules of monthly income in last 12 months. The same as monthly income method to change to 800K THB, yes I broke the rules of monthly income method for last 12 months, but I put 800K two or three months before extension, so I satisfy this? and get an extension based on 800K? The same broken rules but one is extended and another is not extended?
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
the difference is that with monthly income you satisfy the terms of the extension over the year prior to getting the extension (12 months of transfers) whereas with the 800k method you satisfy the terms of the extension over the coming year (meeting the minimum account requirements)
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
agreed. then, why not apply the same to monthly income method?? as you said, I got extension based on monthly income method today. And, I do not transfer any more. Then just two or three months before extension, I just put 800K into Thai bank. and I get extension based on 800K deposit?? if yes, I also havent honoured the terms of my current extension ( monthly income method) It must be transferred monthly more than 65K for 12 months without missing. nevertheless, I get extension based on 800K deposit?
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
My understanding is that for a renewal the 800k has to be in the bank for 12 months so if you transfer it now it won't have enough time for your next renewal. I would recommend checking with Immigration as they are the only ones who know if they will accept it or not
Graham ******
Graham ******
Malcolm Whitlock Your understanding is wrong. For an extension the account balance has to be 800k for two months before the next application (some Immigration Offices are now asking for 3 months). You are right about always checking with Immigration in advance.
Tc *********
Tc *********
Graham Seal sorry but phuket immigration require the 800k in your account the whole year now. They have been advising this last 2 years now. All offices have their own set of rules.
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
Yes but it has to be 800k for the first 3 months after the last extension and 3 months before the next extension and never below 400k for the entire year. The point I was making is that it has to be above 800k for the first 3 months of the year following the last extension so if they transfer it now it won't meet that requirement.
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
I understood so, tell me if I am not correct. At the date of extension, let me say, 27,August 2026. I did monthly method. so accepted and goes on. so I understood that the rules of this extension is monthly method for 12 months. so I must keep this by 27, august 2027. right? Then, whatever it takes, I must keep this rules till next extension.
John **********
John **********
@Yo***
the 2 methods are different. If you get an extension based on 12 months of 65k baht overseas transfers that applies to the 12 months immediately prior to obtaining the extension, not the future 12 months
Yo***
Yo***
@John *********
we are talking about extension only. it is simple to understand how it should work. Once you get extension, from the date of extension, if you use monthly income method, you have to keep it till the next extension ( 12 months ) that was agreed by you and immigration. And if you want to change it to 800K deposit method, do not forget what you agreed at the last extension. yes monthly method for 12 months. so you must keep this and in the mean time you put 800K. then at next extension, you have two methods. monthly and 800K deposit both. then you can change to 800K deposit method. And for next extension, you also have to keep the rules of 800K deposit method. again, the signed and agreed rules from last extension must be kept on till next extension.
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
If that's the case then why do we have to get a 12 month bank statement for the renewal, it's to verify the money has been in the bank for the entire year (800k for first 3 months then 400k for 6 and 800k for the last 3 months). It's been like that for quite a few years now and I have done renewals in both Pattaya and Khon Kaen with both requiring the same. In fact in Pattaya we even had to report back 3 months after the renewal was granted with a photocopy of the bank book to prove the 800k was still in the bank. The 12 month bank statement has been required for at least 6 years and possibly even more.
John **********
John **********

they haven't been using that method of obtaining an extension up until now, so as long as it's in the bank for 2 months before applying they should be OK
