Can my wife work remotely in Thailand on a DTV visa as my dependent?

Hi everyone!

I have a DTV visa as a remote worker, and my wife also received a DTV visa as my dependent. She also has her own remote business, but all of her clients are back home — none are in Thailand.

My question is: Is she legally allowed to continue working remotely from Thailand even though her DTV visa is issued as my dependent? And if immigration asks what she does here, can she openly say that she works remotely for clients outside of Thailand?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experience!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether a wife, holding a DTV visa as a dependent, can legally work remotely for clients outside Thailand. Some participants believe she is allowed to work remotely, while others argue that since her visa is tied to the husband’s DTV status, she is technically not permitted to work in Thailand. The opinions vary, focusing on the specifics of Thai immigration rules regarding remote work and its definitions.

Yes no problem all DTVs are the same.

In my humble opinion, this is allowed. It already says on every DTV e-visa that employment is prohibited (“Remarks: Employment Prohibited”). The remote-working subcategory only serves - like all other subcategories - the right to stay in the country. It does not make a clear statement like: with this you are allowed / not allowed to do remote work.

In the case of the remote-working subcategory the statement is: Your right of stay is based on remote work. Even if someone enjoys the right of stay under a different subcategory ("my dependent", "Soft Power"), remote work is not necessarily prohibited.

Remote work is, in this view, always not prohibited or even tolerated (maybe welcomed) as long as it does not match the Thai definition of employment or business (essentially work done for Thai or Asian customers that could also be done by a Thai person).

Non-binding opinion of a non-lawyer with a sense of legal understanding.

Anonymous participant once you have the DTV there is no restriction that you must only work remote, or only go to the same muay thai school or something like this. There have been some unverified reports of people being denied entry for not having enough money in the bank. there have been verified reports of people being denied for extentions because immigration asks for more paperwork than was originally required to get the visa, but they can just leave the country and return.

I answered your question, do not overthink the DTV.

Anonymous participant 563 You can only work remote on a DTV. Anything you declared to get any visa are the conditions you gained it by and need to stick to.

Maybe I have accidently implied that you’re not restricted to remote work.

I mean if you have the DTV, you can remote work, or do a soft power, or anyone else of the other DTV types. Once granted, they are all effectively the same. You can work remote while doing soft power. (You cannot work local, which all should know and understand already)

Anonymous participant It's very obvious they are answering the question which you have asked in bold writing. What do you need explaining?

She is dependent on you, not allowed to work.

IF she want to work in Thailand she needs to apply for the purpose Workcation.

You can not mix and match different requirements to different purpose of usage of the visa.

Anonymous participant he is talking rubbish. Once granted all DTV is effectively the same. The only time it will come up is if you extend in country at immigration, at which point you will be required to show your qualifying documents.

Anonymous participant 563 And they check in their computer system. Once inside Thailand, internet and computers are ONLY available for expats working on line. The Immigration does not have cell phones and can not call their collegue at border checkpoints to ask why this visa is issued.

You are correct in your dreamland, that might be the reason you are 563,.

Hiding because your information is rubbish.
