Hi all, is there anyone experience travel to Thailand with less than 6 months validity of the passport?

I invited my friend for my wedding. He already booked ticket from Melbourne to Bangkok on 3-9 December 2026. His passport is valid until 20 May 2027. He has to apply for a tourist visa.

According to the Thai e-Visa portal, travel documents must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of visa application.

So, I'm confused whether my friend can travel or not. I called the embassy in Canberra today but it closed due to public holiday.

Thank you in advance for your advice.
Answer summary
The discussion centers around whether a traveler can enter Thailand with a passport that has less than 6 months of validity. While Thailand does not strictly enforce a 6-month passport validity rule at entry, airlines may have policies that require at least 6 months remaining. The consensus among community members is that it's advisable for the traveler to obtain a new passport to avoid complications. Furthermore, as the visa application process requires the passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the application date, applying for a visa with a passport expiring soon could lead to issues with boarding and entry.

Reading through this:

- Your friend has a Nepali passport

- If he applies for a new passport in Australia, it will take more than 2 months. Which is after your wedding date.

Questions:

Can he not go to the Nepal embassy and request an expedited renewal? Or, if he is really desperate, he can report his passport lost and that should surely speed things up. It will probably cost more, but its that or lose the money he has paid for the flights.

ok got it . Best give all the information initially so other dont need to guess. seem you can apply without getting a new passport as the conditions have been meet. if you do the application correctly it will take 10 days. it will be valid for 3 months before use. but why risk it the same question will come in DTAC or THIM applications

One short cut is ask your friend to enter Thailand before 6months due of passport, let say passport expires on May 27, let him travel to Thailand before 6 months, I hope at the time of entry passport validity should be 6months, after that he can stay as per visa

You cannot get in to any Country including Thailand if your passport expires within 6 months. Your friend must renew the passport before traveling

Read carefully.

"6 months from the date of visa application".

So he can apply now and passport validity it's more than 6 months.

If the visa is delivered tomorrow he has 90 days to enter thailand (Jan 2027) .

So, he can apply !

Marcello Giustiniani 3-9 December 2026. His passport is valid until 20 May 2027 => time between the dates is less than 6 months The rule is you requires your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival . If your passport expires sooner than this requirement, airlines may deny you boarding, and border officials can refuse your entry I doubt that the visa will be delivered with this expiry date and if you even get that Visa it is worthless because you can not travel

Ronny Liekens In the OFFICIAL SITE is written '6 months from the date of visa application'.

In my english it is different than '6 months from the date you arrive in Thailand'.

Maybe you're rigth and the OFFICIAL SITE is wrong, but I don't want to bet one baht ! :-D

Marcello Giustiniani You are missing the point.

Yes, he CAN apply, and even GET the tourist visa, but that's not the whole picture.

The rest of the picture is

a) will the airline let him board, since he wouldn't have 6 months remaining on his PP when he's due to BOARD,

and

b) Will Thai Immigration LET him in, again, because he doesn't have 6 months remaining on his PP when he GETS to Thailand.

Recommend the new passport first. In Australia, your friend might be denied boarding the flight is any of henral requirements like this are not followed.

If your friend requires a visa to travel to Thailand he will need more than 6 months validity to when he applies, but he can apply up to 90 days before he travels. While Thailand doesn't require 6 months validity on entry their airline might have a problem letting them board so you need to check with them. A new passport would be the sensible move

Thank you. I asked the airline, and received advice that they will allow check-in provided the Thai embassy approves travel with less than 6 months of validity 🥲

If that's the case, there is a decent chance the embassy will approve it. Normally they only want to see that it was 6 months at the time they applied (yes, it's valid for more than 6 months now if it expires in May) and that the passport will be valid for the amount of time the visa would grant. Since the visa grants 60 days, and it is valid for 90 days, that means the passport needs to be valid for 150 days, which it is.

this is what I received from the airline. However, I also asked a Thai immigration officer, he also confirmed that if my friend still has a valid visa, there won't be any issue at the immigration. I'll try my best to get the confirmation letter. Thank you for your help

You can try to contact the corporate office of the airline to see if they will issue you a letter. Or ask for supervisor at the airport.

@Brandon ***********
Yes 😭 they can't issue the letter that approve his travel except tourist visa. Not sure whether he should take a risk to check-in. The officer said it might be ok as he travels only 7 days and has return ticket already. But no one knows what's gonna happen at check-in desk. Thank you for your advice.

@Tinyada ********
Yes, that's correct. Most airline staff are trained not to let anyone fly with a passport less than 6 months. Most countries have the rule that you cannot enter without 6 months on your passport, so that's why the staff are trained that way. But Thailand doesn't actually have such a rule, so if your friend can get to Thailand, they'll be fine.

I contacted the embassy today. An officer said they will grant the visa if his passport has more than 6 months validity from application date. However, she said it's an airline issue. They might let my friend on board or not.
