I'm in jomtien now, just got my residence certificate from immigration, plus SIM card , can i open k bank account with no visa, I'm here on visa exemption as a tourist, which branch is most understanding? Thanks
Summary so far
The consensus among community members is that opening a bank account in Thailand as a tourist is highly challenging due to recent banking policies that restrict account openings for those on visa-exempt entry. Most banks require a long-term visa and may refuse applications even with a residence certificate. Some members shared personal experiences of successfully opening accounts, but many cautioned that these accounts are prone to being frozen if the bank later determines the account holder lacks the appropriate visa.

Not the same as in the past cannot do if ot is allowed by the bank it probably won't stay open long or be frozen
It's possible open a bank account with a residency certificate because Immigration should only issue them to people with a long term visa however if the bank finds out that he doesn't have the right visa they could and probably will freeze the account
Malcolm Whitlock Even Thais have had bank accounts frozen over the last year so it's not a crackdown on tourists with bank accounts. Mine was restricted last year and I've always entered with a Non-O for many years.
It’s true that banks absolutely will not open bank accounts for anyone on visa exempt entry.
It bears pointing out that this is very new. Just a couple of years ago, Bangkok Bank directly marketed savings accounts to tourists on their website.
That doesn’t change the situation now, but some people like to lie and say “its always been that way,” (it hasn’t) and say that “no country in the world will let you open an account as a tourist” which is also a lie.
You can open accounts in Laos, Philipines, and the USA as a tourist. I opened one in Vietnam as a tourist but this may not longer be possible.
Anyway that doesn’t change the current situation but I think some perspective is in order.
I do not think you will find any bank willing to open a bank account for you on a visa-exempt entry, no matter what. Since the banking rules tightened by February 2025, tourists are not elegible for bank accounts anymore
You are a tourist. Tourists are not eligible for bank accounts. There are no banks which are understanding. It's the policy of every bank to not open bank accounts for tourists.
AtrustworthyJaguar you are right. The bank will want to look at the visa in the passport. Regardless of COR, they will not process the application if it is NOT long term.
