Are you allowed to enroll in Thai language classes while living in Thailand on a Non-O retirement extension? At some point I'd like to learn the language - would I need to switch to education visa to do that? I haven't found anything on this online. TIA for any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
You are allowed to enroll in Thai language classes while living in Thailand on a Non-O retirement extension visa. Multiple comments confirm that no special visa is needed for studying, and you can freely sign up for classes to learn the language.

No, you don't need to change a visa. You can study with a non-o visa.

Here's a good article tell you how to choose a good language school:

… and I heard that it is a good idea to get in-person education because of the many nuances of pronouncing, and tonal inflection that one will miss and develop habits difficult to un-learn if self-taught.

People get ed visas so they can stay in Thailand for awhile, but nor vice versa. Taking classes is fine, I’m enrolled at Rak Thai now.

You can take any classes you want on any visa. Just remember that a special visa is required to enter and drink at any of the bars here.

I have found that the best way to learn Thai is by teaching Thai kids English. An option to consider perhaps...

what a great idea! I would not have thought of that, but is it legal on a retirement visa? I thought even unpaid work was not. I’d love to do it.

Yes, even volunteering or working for free is illegal if you don't have the correct visa

Technically you are correct. Of course, there's a difference between a quick 10 minute impromptu "English lesson" while having dinner and doing it on an ongoing basis, even if, in both cases, no fee is charged. The former is no issue, the latter might be.
