I am 62 years old and have a Thai bank account that has held over 800,000 baht for a year. My question is, if I come to Thailand on a one-month tourist visa, can I apply there for a one-year non-immigrant O visa?
Answer summary
The original poster (OP) inquired about the possibility of applying for a one-year Non-Immigrant O visa while holding a one-month tourist visa and having 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account. Multiple community members affirmed that the OP can eventually convert their tourist visa into the Non-O visa, provided they meet certain conditions including having at least 15 days left on their current stamp, showing proof of funds, and having a rental contract. They also emphasized that it is generally easier to apply for the initial Non-O visa outside of Thailand to avoid complications.

I was required to get my non-immigrant O visa at a thai consulate "outside of Thailand"...which was not so bad. That was many moons ago..however. In any case, a simple trip to Savanahet, Laos...applied and got it the same day. Then came back and got the one year extension on it, before the 90 days were up. At that time, I did hear some people were able to convert their tourist visa to a non O, in Bangkok (perhaps as well as some other places). Why don't you just call an Immigration Office in Bangkok and ask?

Why do people put themselves through all this crap to stay in a country that constantly changes its rules in order to make it more and more difficult to stay here?

YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE! Take the hint and move to a country like Vietnam which welcomes us with open arms and is a lot cheaper than Thailand,

Wake up people before the Thai government seized all you money and leaves you with nothing! You have been warned!

Yes , you can.

I also changed my husband’s status from a tourist visa to a Non-O Retirement Visa because he had already had a bank account in Thailand for more than 15 years.

We had been living outside Thailand all along, but my husband opened a bank account in Thailand and continued depositing money into the account regularly.

When he reached retirement age, we traveled to Thailand on a tourist visa and immediately applied to change his status upon arrival in Thailand.

As of today, we have been living in Thailand for over three years.

I have had the B800,000 in Bangkok Bank for 30 years. Because I often worked in other countries and could not maintain my Non-O visa, I just came in on 30day permission to stay and went to Bangkok Immigration and applied for a Non-O visa again which is the only Visa issued in Thailand. They gave me another 30 days extension while they made sure I was not cheating by using an agent, and then gave me 12months again. in 1999 I was using an agent to do my accounts and visa but she got arrested and thrown out the country because she was helping other foreigners run fake companies with nominee shareholders.

Axelthai Slewuap . . there is nothing such as a one month tourist visa, and there is nothing such as a 1-year Non-Immigrant O Visa. . . . . What you are going to do is, enter either visa-exempt (60 or 30 days, depends) or on a single entry 60-days Tourist Visa. Apply for the "change of visa type" on Immigration from the touristic entry, to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, while you still have a minimum of 15 days left on your admitted stay. You must show a minimum of 800,000 THB already sitting in your Thai bank account. You must show a rental contract of a minimum of 3 months. The fee is 2000 Baht, the stamp is issued for 14 days "under consideration" first. . . . . And up from 30 days before the 90 days expire, apply for the "One Year Extension of the Stay Permit Based on Retirement". The 800,000 THB must have seasoned for 2 months, you show the bank letter that confirms it, and pay a fee of 1900 Baht. The one-year stay permit is not a "one year retirement visa", it just is an extended stay permit and not a visa

It's much easier to get the initial 90-day non-o visa in your home country.. using funds held in your home bank account.. then enter Thailand using that.. once you have 30 days or less left on that visa you can apply for the 12-month extension of stay at your local immigration office.. and will use your Thai bank account funds to fulfil the financial requirements.. note, some offices will allow you to apply for the extension when there is 45 days left on the visa.. eg. Chiang Mai 👍

While there is no 1 month tourist visa as many folks are pointing out..

You can apply for a Non-O inside of Thailand if you already have the Thai bank.

But why would you?

Just apply before you go.

I remember only a Non-OA (1-year E-Visa) was available in 2024 from Los Angeles Thai consulate.

It requires Full battery for medical tests for Thai Health insurance, FBI report, financials. No Thai Bank or funds required.

The Non-O is the one I’d recommend when you get here.

I can absolutely guarantee you that the Non-O was available on the eVisa platform when applying through LA Consulate.

Axelthai Slewuap Understood.

Just out of curiosity, from where are you applying?

I might suggest doing it from a different country.

I'd rather spend time chilling at a hotel or seeing some sights than spending more time than necessary at any Immigration Office in Thailand.

While it's possible, getting my Non-O based on marriage in country was a PITA. And while the retirement options is probably less so... it's likely still going to be a solid few hours just hanging out at the IO.

No such thing as a one month tourist visa, it's a 60 day tourist visa and currently a visa exempt entry still gets you stamped in for 60 days although at some point that might reduce to 30.

Whether or not you can convert your entry to a Non-O visa based on retirement will depend entirely on whether the immigration office you will use is allowed to issue such a visa, not all can, you may also need to be able to show that the money in your bank account has originated from overseas and you need at least 15 days (21 in some locations) on your current entry stamp in order to apply.

I'd suggest it's much easier to apply for the 90 day Non-O visa before you travel to Thailand, not only for the above reasons but it also eliminates 2 visits to your immigration office. You can still use the money in your thai bank account when applying elsewhere if you wish.
Ian *******

I do not believe you have to show that the 800k baht came from overseas. You do need to show it has been in the account for the required amount of time.
