I am coming over next year to obtain a retirement visa. On the website before i get there it says proof of income of 65k baht which i have. However i was going to come in visa exempt and do it all once i arrived. I already have a thai bank account that i have had for a long time. What do you guys think is the best option?
Answer summary
The best approach for obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand is to apply for a NON-O visa before arriving, as it simplifies the immigration process and eliminates potential issues related to tourist entry requirements. It is crucial to meet the financial requirements, specifically having 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or proving an income of 65,000 baht monthly through prior international transfers. Attempting to convert from a tourist visa upon arrival can complicate your ability to provide the necessary proof of income, as immigration in Thailand only accepts specific financial documentation for retirement visa applications.

Your visa 90 days can only work if you apply before you go. Using a visa on arrival will disqualify you from applying.

Don’t come on a tourist visa, just get your non O and then come over, 100% easier

If you thai bank acct is still working .....it is still possible to come in on tourist visa and convert to nonO retirement inside thailand....for the initial 90days nonO and 1st extensions it will only be the 800k method .....the 65k method will be only available the following year

You are getting a lot of advice to get the visa before you come to Thailand. This is good advice.

One thing that yoy may find is that your account has been frozen. All Thai banks do this. If it has you won't get it unfroze without a long term visa. Another thing to keep in mind.

Andy Oswald first I’ve heard about bank acct being frozen? Why and please elaborate. Thks

Would frozen mean i cant transfer money into it?

Mark Nykvist no you can still make deposits into a frozen account. To find out if the account is currently frozen try making a small transfer out of the account.

not even an agent if you use a n on entry visa. You asked the question. Ignore it at your peril.

So they did put 800k in ya bank to get retirement?
Nongnuch ********

Mark Nykvist No, they only put 800,000 THB into your bank account for 10 minutes. That's why you need the agent over and over again in the following years, because you are violating the rules for the upkeep of the deposit. Technically you go into overstay the very moment the agent removes the money. You pay tea money so Immigration ignores the violation . . .if anything goes south, you can get deported and blacklisted. I would use my own funds of 800,000 THB and have a sound sleep at night knowing I did everything according to the book

Mark Nykvist the rules are changing and using an agent to cover an opening account are probably going away and won’t be allowed anymore. Best to have the 800,000THB in an account. I arrived on non-O retirement planning to marry my Thai now wife. I had the 400,000THB needed for that but not 800,000. After we got married I still had to leave Thailand and reapply for a new non-O marriage visa. Just got approved in two days so now we can go back to Thailand this week. I already had a Thai bank account with 400,000THB in it but it needs to be in the account for 60 days before I can apply for my one year extension of stay. Getting a bank account on a visa exempt tourist visa is not possible. I went to dozens of banks and couldn’t get one even on a non-O retirement visa. You need to get a Thai SIM registered to your passport and a certificate of residency from immigration before a bank will even consider it. Now that I have my marriage visa I can easily get additional bank accounts to use for daily living expenses but the original 400,000THB account won’t be used for anything. Be sure to deposit some additional money to cover annual banking fees. K Bank charges a fee annually to renew your debit card and it comes directly from your account.

I'm not sure where you get your information from but you should apply for a non-ovisa before you get here. Just go to Thai EVisa site online.

If you have 800k in Thai bank or the requirements fulfilled and the account is still active, you can follow the instructions below to change your visa.

Im about to attempt my first OA visa extension inside Thailand with monthly income. I know its a longshot. Will use, as i did for first Visa, bank certification, pension letters, US Bank statements, Thai bank statements. If not approved will do new one back in US when I travel. I will post my provinces immigration decision

Bigd Thailand are you aware that Immigration wants to see a new 1-year health insurance contract with one of the Thai tgia-listed private health insurance companies? Your foreign insurance will not be accepted anymore from the 1-year extension onward

Bigd Thailand If you get new 12 month insurance and do a border bounce just before your Non-OA visa (NOT your entry stamp) expires and you will get a new ~12 month entry stamp.

I guess the immigration officer was in a good mood and liked my Thai GF ;)

They will not even entertain your request. It's not an option. It's embassy certified income, or 12 months of international transfers into your Thai bank account of 65,000 baht every single month for the previous 12 months.

They don't care about anything else you have, that can very easily be created with chatgpt.

/ Interesting to read your comment.

I have had a Non O-A Visa for the last 3 years that I have applied for from Sweden. It has been working good but when I go back to Sweden in April-May I intend to extend my Visa before leaving and also apply for multiple entries.

I have since January 2026 deposited about 66.000 THB from my Swedish account to my Thai account and intend to keep it up every month.

Do you think (and I hope) this will be ok for the financial part of the application of the extension?

Otherwise I will probably have to deposit the full 800.000 THB but I really dont see any benefits to have that on an account with no interest at all.

I dont have a pension so the deposits is just from my account.

Thankful for answers.

it might work since you were on a non-immigrant status while the transfers were made

It's always easiest to get the non-O visa before traveling to Thailand. It requires less trips to immigration, and makes it easier to travel since you don't have to worry about tourist entry requirements if you have a visa.

You won't be able to use proof of income for applying for the visa if you try to do it inside Thailand, and you won't be able to use it for your extension at immigration either.

Immigration only accepts 2 things for converting from tourist to retirement, and for the first annual extension.

1) proof of 800,000 baht in your Thai bank account.

2) embassy certified income

Your embassy in Thailand does not do income verification, so that means the only option available to you is proof of 800,000 baht in your Thai bank account.

thanks for the education. How do you get the 2nd option if the embassy doesn’t provide it? Are there any USA banks in Thailand?

Petr S. Van Valkenburg What do you not understand? Your embassy in Bangkok does NOT verify your government pension to show Immigration, that's why it is NOT an option for you, at least NOT for the first 1-year extension

Petr S. Van Valkenburg you make 12 monthly deposits from an overseas source into your Thai bank account, when you are in Thailand on your type O one year extension, then the following year you can switch to the . monthly deposit method.

why is listed as an option than ? Has to be way instead of giving money away to a Thai bank !!!
