TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry pertains to whether a Filipina residing in Bangkok can renew her ED Visa at either the Kota Baru or Penang Embassy in Malaysia. Community responses indicate that visas cannot be renewed, but rather a new application must be submitted with assistance from the relevant school. Additionally, there may be informal language testing at the Thai consulate related to the applicant's proficiency in Thai.

I recently read an info letter from a Koh Phangan language school that Penang currently only issues ED visas if there is no prior Thai visa of any kind in the passport. They advise their students to fly to Bali ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ. Was actually browsing this group to find more info on this out of general interest and am a bit surprised nothing is mentioned here regarding this matter.

BUT we have no idea
@Ju***
, if that's a real school or a visa mill or what the deal is. I know the schools up here in bangkok have sent their students to Penang to get another ED visa for the advanced thai class portion of the curriculum and there were no problems. I think a LOT of it is previous entry history. If you milked time here on tourist visas, visa exempt entries BEFORE you jumped on the ED visa bandwagon you can have problems

Okay, if it's their second year ED visa there are reports that the consulate officers DO chat with you in thai. Face it IF you've gone to class for a year and can't carry on a b/s conversation in thai, you probably don't deserve to get another visa. It's not formal testing, they just talk to you, what's your name, where are you from, where do you study, do you like thailand, can you eat spicy food, do you have a thai b/f, g/f etc.

Same when you go to stamp back in to the country comin' in on the second year ED visa. The officers at passport control WILL chat with you.

Your friend should be prepared to be tested in Thai at the Thai Consulate...and possibly again by Thai Immigration upon arrival into Thailand.

Most people get the visas from whatever school they send them to. A letter has to be written to the sow consulate.

There is a high likelihood your friend will be tested on what was learned. If your friend has been going to class, it should be fine.

the problem at the moment that even schools can not be sure about which place is gonna accept. We have a real nightmare with ED applications. It's like rolling a dice or worse.

No, you cannot renew a visa. She can ask her school to help out to get the documents to apply for a new visa

What language?

Will this be their second year Ed visa for same language?

When/what month/year did they obtain their current Ed Visa?
