Can DTV holders from August 2026 open a Wise Bank Account based in Thailand which will enable them to use the Thai banking system such as QR payments and bank transfers ? Can anyone explain in detail what will be the advantages and disadvantages of the new system if I already own a Wise account from my home country.
Answer summary
DTV holders in Thailand may face restrictions when opening a Wise Bank account, with many users pointing out disadvantages compared to existing accounts from their home countries. Key issues include mandatory conversion to Thai Baht (THB) for all transactions, potential double fees, inability to withdraw cash from ATMs, and automatic classification of funds as remitted to Thailand. While QR payments can be utilized, these accounts are subject to local banking regulations, and concerns were raised about whether a Wise account registered in Thailand will be available for DTV holders. Users recommend alternative apps for QR payments.

After reading endless comments I have found few advantages if any, but there seems to be some negatives. If you want QR scanning use Moreta App and connect it to Wise. Its very good

There are a a lot of disadvantages to a Thai Wise vs one in your home country, in particular that everything gets automatically converted into THB, even if you are transferring between two other currencies, everything has to go through THB and get converted twice, with double fees.

The debit card you won't be able to use at Thai ATMs to get cash.

With it set up this way everything you send into Wise, any incoming payments, will immediately be converted to THB and considered remitted to Thailand. You can hold other currencies but it will be converted to THB first and you'd have to convert back.

You can already do Thai bank transfers as things are. QR codes are handy but really NBD, I only really use them when I forget my cash but have my phone with me.

You can't have two Wise accounts, so if you update your address to Thailand, you are stuck with all of this. Not worth it to be able to use QR codes.

Also be aware that most likely all money transferred to a Thai Wise account will be seen as remitted to Thailand.

When you actually use the Wise account only for money you spend in Thailand that makes no difference, but when you put money in from outside Thailand and spend it outside Thailand it is a disadvantage.

for taxes there is no difference between bank accounts, but money in a Thai Wise account will be considered as brought into Thailand immediately, while the money on an international account only is considered brought in when you get at Thai ATM, pay at Thai shop or transfer to Thai account.

So not put money on a Thai Wise account that you don't want to use in Thailand.

With the Thai Wise account you should also be able to pay street vendors with a private account with QR.

With an international Wise account only bussiness accounts.

With a Wise account registered in your home country nothing will change. It's still not clear if Wise accounts registered in Thailand will be available to DTV holders as they refer to it as a Non-immigrant account which it is most definitely not. I asked them and they couldn't yet provide a definitive answer.

with an account in your home country you wil also get Thai QR payment options, but only for bussiness accounts.

You can't hold two accounts. So you'll need to choose one only. Except the QR, nothing much interesting, everything needs to be converted to THB, no ATM withdrawal and you'll be under Thai banking regulations (taxes and so ones).
