Do I need to make any preparations for my trip to Chiang Mai, or can I just land and get a visa exemption?

I'm a US citizen flying into Chiang Mai from Canada this July.

I've been told that I don't need to make any preparations. I can just land in Chiang Mai and get a visa exemption for 30 days. And then, if I want to stay longer, I can extend my visa exemption for another 30 days for $60.

Was I told correctly? Or are there any preparations I need to make before I fly out?
