Why do many expats find the US State Department's travel warnings for Thailand excessive or unfounded?

Guy, let's relax with the posts about the US state department making Thailand a "Level 4 do not travel" country. I just declined 3 of them.

The US State department has just about every country listed as do not travel. And historically Thailand has always had a warning of "exercise extreme caution when traveling to Thailand, thefts, robberies, police corruption, blah blah blah".

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discusses the US State Department's Level 4 travel warning for Thailand, expressing skepticism regarding its validity. Several comments highlight that many countries have similar warnings, and some believe the warnings do not accurately reflect the safety of Thailand compared to the US. The conversation also touches on people's personal safety experiences in Thailand versus the US, with many finding Thailand to be a safer destination.

You should totally leave that up there, man! May deter some of the crazies from comin’ over. Lord knows we’re already full up here!

The UK FCO is very rude to Thailand. I have apologised but now I just point them to Sir Simon McDonald on YouTube.

And when they try to explain something they usually get it back to front.

Really?

"exercise extreme caution when traveling to Thailand, thefts, robberies, police corruption, blah blah blah".

Thats kinda cute. I must travel is some of the worst places. But most Americans are kinda pansies.

not most…just the ones who get far too much visibility (and they’re usually the ones who portray themselves as tough guys).

Early treatment or prophylactic administration of Ivermectin (.4-.6mg per kilo of bodyweight) is just as effective as any vaccine. If the Thai people knew, they'd be out of this ordeal. Sad and unfortunate.

lmaooooooo thanks for the laugh. I needed that today.

I'll assume you're siding with the detractors. That is understandable considering all the misleading press surrounding the medicine. if you have any facts counter to what I've spent months trying to convey to the public, then please state them.

Here's how it works and the problems affiliated with the official approval process involved...

The medicine is at its most effective when used as a preventative measure or for early treatment up to at least 97 percent effective at dosages ranging from .2mg to .6mg.

For late treatment, effectiveness lessens down to 30%, unfortunately.

Randomized control trials are expensive and usually reserved for big pharma. In addition, proof of prophylactic effectiveness is harder to come by than treatment based (especially now given the vaccine rollouts). Also, dosage administered in numerous trials previously were far below the effective amount needed for positive outcomes resulting in lower ratings.

There are two major trials coming up.. The Oxford PRINCIPLE study and the Malaysian study..The Oxford study involves over 5,000 Covid patients with no more than 14 days of positive Covid results. .3mg per Kilo of bodyweight will administered (.4 to.6mg would've been optimal for the Delta variant but it's an improvement).

The Malaysian governmental study is expected to be completed in September and it involves 12 hospitals with 2nd to 3rd stage Covid patients receiving .4mg dosage. Due to ethics, they cannot perform RCTs involving prevention, in which I find unfortunate given the higher outcomes that would result.

With that said, I find the parameters for both studies acceptable. If the trials show very little benefit then I will happily retire from the crusade and move on. If not...watch out!

BTW, here are a few more 'facts...

Dr. Kory, the world's leading #1 outspoken Ivermectin proponent and head of the FLCCC, introduced the medical field to corticosteroid use for Covid and won the British Medical Association’s 2015 President’s Choice award in medical textbooks for his work on Point of Care Ultrasound. This man is far from being the quack the media is painting him out to be.

Ivermectin isn't the only player in town. Being an Ivermectin advocate doesn't make one anti-vax (I'm still pro-vax, just slightly less than I used to be given my exposure to numerous alternatives). If you think vaccines are the only way out of the pandemic, then you might be in for a major overhaul of your worldview after viewing this..

Read the first sentence, then the second sentence. Identify the subject of the 1st sentence and determine the correlation between the main subject of the 1st sentence (would be a noun) and the second sentence.

I think you can do this, we believe in you.

That system's rankings are defunct now anyways. They use to rate Thailand a level 1 and places like Afghanistan or Somalia a level 4, now Thailand is level 4! Imagine that!

I feel safer here (in Thailand) than where a certain group of people can destroy cities And kill at will all in the name of protest... It's not about **M it's about all lives should matter...

Funny thing...if you replace 'Thailand' with 'USA'....it sounds just as accurate. 🙂

"exercise extreme caution when traveling to USA, thefts, robberies, police corruption, blah blah blah"

in almost 2 decades here, and 50 odd countries, have seen less crime, theft, robberies, fights or even arguments than any country.

Also, most polite and civil of any other.

I 100% agree that some parts of the US are 10x dangerous than Mexico or Medellin Colombia. Bangkoks one of the safest cities I've ever lived (Seoul is a bit safer to be fair).

@Garrett **********
I was living in Florida and people would ask me how I could feel safe traveling around SE Asia and Central America alone. I laughed. I told them I felt much safer than in a city where people were shocked that I lived alone without a gun. Enough said.
Marguyvin **********
@Ruth ******
And that's without even the added consideration for Covid safety, which is why the State dept. upgraded Thailand to level 4. Many southern states are in the same boat because of low compliance and low vax rates. LOL
Ruth *******
@MarGuyvin **
Florida is one of the highest. In fact, even nationwide, the per capita infection rate in the U.S. is higher than Thailand. The death rate is ~equal and this is despite ~half of Americans being vaccinated (and 99% of those dying are not). People claiming that Thailand is more dangerous than the U.S. is just ridiculous. I’m in the safest area of the U.S. right now. I’m just wrapping some final business up and can’t wait to get back to Thailand.
Marguyvin **********
@Ruth ******
Well then...when you get back to LOS it will be a cakewalk compared to Florida's Level 4. 😃 You might not like that everything's closed here though. #LockDown

Lol I know, people in NJ ask me that all the time, "but is it safe though?" Camden, NJ is like one of the most dangerous cities in the USA.

Well, at least it’s not Orange 🙂 (I had family there). People are funny. Florida (particularly Palm Beach County) is amusing. Their idea of venturing outside their comfort zone is going to England (assuming they leave the country at all).

If one were to base their travel decisions on the US state department recommendations, they would legit never leave the US, even pre-covid. I find it best to just ignore them completely.
