What can we learn from the different outcomes of DTV applications with varying course lengths in Thailand?

A Tale of Two Courses

I am sharing the following experience for everyone’s knowledge. Interpret the results as you will, and I would love to hear everyone’s opinions. I am presenting the facts as they happened, none of this is heresy and can be verified if anyone has any doubts.

For context, I own a Muay Thai gym that many people in this group have used (Tiger Eye) and have been involved in a lot of DTV applications, covering around 70 nationalities and applications through roughly 50 different embassies and consulates. Even with that experience, I don't consider myself the arbiter of truth. My position has always been that there are simply too many variables that we don't fully understand, and each embassy seems to weigh factors differently.

About a week ago, two different people received two very different outcomes that went completely against the conventional wisdom and advice. I understand that most people are trying to help, and I genuinely think there is a lot of useful information shared here. But I also think we need to be careful not to mistake common advice for universal truth.

The first case was a British citizen applying in London. They applied with a one-month course. They met the financial requirements, but there wasn't anything particularly noteworthy about the application, and as far as I'm aware they had no ongoing income.

They were approved.

The second case was a Western European citizen applying in Jakarta. This applicant had a one-year course, well over the minimum financial requirement, more than one million baht in liquid savings, additional liquid funds in another account, investments, a detailed financial explanation, and a professionally written cover letter. They had also recently started a business and included a well-structured prospectus explaining its future income potential, although in my opinion that wasn't even necessary because their savings alone comfortably exceeded the requirements.

Honestly, it was one of the most meticulously prepared applications I've seen.

They were given a METV. They weren’t even rejected. They were given a METV which is valid for 6 months and obviously doesn’t cover a commitment to train for one year. People are told that you must have 9 months or 12 months or you risk getting an METV. This case directly contradicts that notion. Obviously, in previous cases where applicants got a METV perhaps course length was a factor, but this case makes you wonder if that is actually the case?

Now, could there have been factors that I wasn't aware of? Absolutely. None of us ever has the complete picture.

But these aren't isolated examples from my experience.

The reason I'm sharing this is because I often see people immediately assume that if someone is rejected with a course shorter than nine or twelve months, then the course length must have been the reason. Likewise, if someone is approved with a one-year course, it's often presented as proof that a one-year course is the "safe" option. And if someone is approved with a course length less than 6 months (or even less than 9 months) they are told they got lucky.

These two cases tell a different story.

Of course, all else being equal, a longer course probably makes for a stronger application. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. But I also don't think the evidence suggests that course length is the overwhelmingly dominant factor that it's sometimes made out to be.

My advice has always been to focus on the specific embassy you're applying through, because embassies clearly have different approaches and different expectations.

Ultimately, I think the biggest takeaway is that we should all be a little more cautious about speaking in absolutes. This Facebook group contains a huge amount of valuable information, but it's still only a sample of applicants. It may have its own biases, blind spots, and patterns that don't necessarily reflect the totality of DTV applications worldwide.

In the end DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE. Make a genuine intention to actually do the activity you are signing up for. Look at the embassy specific requirements because each embassy is NOT the same. Some of them have vastly different expectations and requirements.

Good luck everyone.
Answer summary
This post discusses two contrasting cases of applications for the Thai non-immigrant DTV visa, highlighting unexpected outcomes. The first case involved a British citizen applying for a one-month course, who was approved despite a lack of substantial supporting documents. The second involved a Western European citizen applying for a one-year course with comprehensive financial backing, which resulted in receiving a METV instead of a full visa. The author emphasizes that conventional wisdom regarding course lengths may not be as definitive as perceived and urges applicants to focus on specific embassy requirements, as different embassies may have different expectations.

Always have (at least) 3 accounts.

1. Park the Bt800k and never touch it - no ATM card.

2. Your large cash balance account - no ATM card (or in the safe)

3. Daily transaction account - funded from Account 2.

I arrived on the non o 90 day. It's getting harder to open bank accounts but finally I did so. I had to leave it for two months before applying for the marriage visa, support Thai wife. I was going to run out of time and we visited immigration and the officer was good providing a 30 day extension.

Went back and they issued the visa..I'm now on my second extension.

Now the money in the bank stays there with my state aged pension going in every four weeks. I don't touch it.

I opened a second account which is what I use for the every day purchases. As I am frugal, my lowly pension has allowed the balance into 1st account to grow a bit.

Upshot, get one account to start. Let the money 'settle', then open a second IN A DIFFERENT BANK. It's a good back up.

Good luck.

For the remaining seven months of that year , you must maintain at least a 400,000 baht balance. This must be repeated to continue to get vise renewals each year. In other words, If your balance is dropped below 800,000 baht , you must bring it back up to at least 800,000 baht , two months prior to your next visa renewal application. And maintain this balance for 3 months following the renewal approval.

A lot of good advice here, supporting both approaches. Just one comment to add - if you do elect to have two accounts, make sure your 800k account is 800k plus a little bit, as the banks charge a yearly fee for ATM use. This charge might come at the wrong timing and drop you below the minimum.

I have 2. IF you can get 2 different accounts, then do yourself a favor and do it. Not necessary, but nice to have. If you have a NON O VISA and need to open an account then skip Bangkok Bank. They have gone through changes and I was personally shown by one of their branch managers their new policy in writing. They will only open accounts for NON O X or NON O A VISA's. I saw this in writing, but she wouldn't give me a copy.

Definitely get 2 accounts. Preferably at two different banks.

One where you park your 800+ k. And the other one for your day to day 🏧 and daily living expenses.

Immigration like to just see your money sitting there year after year, one years Bank Statement is the same year after year. Previous years balance plus a tiny bit of interest less their charges, plus 1k deposit on day of applying, proving account is stable and up to date.

On a need to know basis they don't need to know where you go, what restaurants you eat at or how much you spend on weekly shopping. Keep that separate and private.

Using one account only you would end up paying more for a years statement, having to sign every page and for WHAT????

Two separate Banks is definitely the way to go. 😃😃😃

Two now for exactly that reason. One for day to day use, and another for just foreign transfers of over 65k monthly.

Plus Bangkok Bank does not like to do the required statement since August of last year.
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
You can just use one but for me I prefer to have separate accounts, I use the 'visa' account for transfering money into Thailand and then move it to my daily account. This means that if necessary Immigration sees overseas transfers into the account that I use for the visa and also the bank knows it's an active account. I worry that if the account sits with no activity for years except getting the statement and letter for immigration they might think it's a dead account and freeze it. Using separate accounts means you don't accidentally drop below the minimum, just remember that if you have a bank card a few hundred baht will be taken out for that each year so don't sit on just 800,000 but keep at least a couple of 1000 extra in it just to be safe.

Malcolm Whitlock I agree with Paul Ed that’s the best way to manage if you’re using the 800k option. I also use the same principle with my 65k+ per calendar month for the same reasons and result. The only upside been my 800k stays outside of Thailand gaining a better interest rate then the Thai banks offer!
Malcolm **********
Malcolm **********
Justin Steele If you can transfer the 65,000 each month and ensure that it arrives on time then that's a perfectly valid way but for me I prefer the 800,000 in a Thai bank as it's also a backup source for a medical emergency and as it never moves I have no worries about a late transfer. If I have to use some of it I will deal with the problems when I do the renewal, maybe I'll just return to UK for a holiday or have a trip to Laos and get a new O-visa and transfer the 800,000 from my UK funds to start over. Rinse & repeat as they say

Paul Ed of course not. But what i don't understand is why would you try to avoid opening 2 accounts at all costs ?

What do you think you are tryi g to gain with limiting to 1 account ?

Paul ****
Paul ****
BC Farang The main point of the question is to see what most people do, the 1 only account question was if only having 1 account with the 800k in, would it of had any effect on daily use. I will of course open 2 accounts based on the good answers I have received 😊
BC ********
BC ********
Paul Ed yes, the best you can do is opening several accounts.

First of all : a separate account for your 800k for vis extensions. Ideally you use a fixed deposit account with kasikorn or similar. This gives you a little extra intrest as bonus, But you don't do it for the extra intrest (which is negligible), but because it protects you from accidentally drawing from this account. It is impossible to accidentally draw from this account getting below the 800k required. It is impossible to make all the required mistakes in a row by accident. A normal current savings account you could make a mistake by overdrawing.

Apart from that I strongly advice to have working / current accounts with 2 different banks. Just in case anything goes wrong. The one you use most I would take an e-account (without bankbook) as it is silly to use a bankbook for a daily used account which then prints a line for every sill;y expense you do by card or qr code.

On top of that a true wallet account is also very useful.

And most things I pay with cash anyway, to keep cash alive and it is very confusing and ridiculous to see endless rows of purchases of 10, 25, 38, 152, 17,... baht.

Avoid Bangkok Bank.

So a good combination would be Kasikorn with extra fixed deposit dedicated for visa. ALL bankbook based. Add to that their investment possibilities of feeder funds.

Then SCB e-accounts for daily expenses. They have a good multi-currency top-up debit card. This shields your account when using this card domestically or abroad.

Then also a true wallet as extra if you like. Can also use this and its virtual debit card to buy/pay online etc,... with the top-up safety.
Ray ********

Paul Ed re you using only one account. Yes, you can do that,,, but if you make them wade through 10 or more pages of bank statements, All of which YOU have to pay for, and sign, just so they can be sure you didn't go below the required limits, is definitely not the best way to stay in their good books.

But, Yes you can do it your way. BUT I wouldn't. Up 2 You. 😃😞😃
