I’m a Canadian in Thailand (5+ yrs on Non-B, paying taxes) running an AI consulting biz (HK LLC, US clients). My visa expires end-Aug 2025, so I’m applying for DTV (freelance or business owner?) to bridge to LTR for PR later. Which DTV category is best for PR transition? Planning to apply in Cambodia/Vietnam. Advice appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian expat in Thailand for over five years is seeking advice on the best DTV category to transition towards Permanent Residency (PR). Given that the DTV is primarily a tourist visa and may not lead directly to PR, respondents suggest either the freelance or business owner route, with a stronger suggestion towards the latter as it may demonstrate economic contribution. Emphasis is placed on the need for a valid work permit for PR applications and the importance of meeting tax contribution requirements. Many experts warn against switching to a DTV as it could reset their residency timeline.

Just to check, your AI business is based in Thailand , and you have a work permit? If not, you’ve not got a path to PR

Do not change to DTV! It will reset

All DTV categories are wrong for PR transiotion because DTV is just a tourist visa.

You talk about a bridge between Non-B and LTR, but I think DTV is not a bridge at all between these two, but more of a gap.

To get PR you need to be able to show 3 years worth of earnings inside Thailand. The DTV does not allow you to work inside Thailand earning money from inside Thailand. There is no route to PR from it. The only LTR option that could possibly lead to PR is the Highly Skilled Professional category

If you have your own business then choose the workcation category. Draw up a contract, and employment certificate hiring yourself and authorizing yourself to work remotely in Thailand. Likely need to submit at least 3 months of personal bank statements where you can highlight your income maintaining balance of the 500K funding requirement.

For PR you need to be a tax resident for 3 years, im not too sure if the type of visa matters as much as your contribution to nations coffers in terms of tax, usually taxable income that qualifies does have a lower bound, i dont remember the exact amount, taxable income of 85k a month I think.

In short whether you spring for dtv or ltr make sure you meet the tax contribution requirements either as an investor or business owner.

Type of visa matters.

For PR you need to be on a Non-Immigrant Visa for 3 years paying taxes etc if going the employment rather than family route. You can do that on your current "B". Going to DTV and then back to a Non-Immigrant is going to reset the clock to zero whterh it is B again or LTR.

You need a valid work permit to apply for PR or be on a non O. DTV is a tourist visa.

For your situation, both freelance/professional and business owner DTV categories are possible. For future LTR/PR, the business owner route usually looks stronger as it shows economic contribution. Given the uncertain situation at the Thailand–Cambodia border, it’s generally safer to apply from Vietnam or Laos. Make sure all business and tax documents are complete.
