I want to visit for a month. What visa will I need? How many times can I enter the country this way? If I decide to retire in Thailand what do I need to do? I live about 1 1/2 hours from Washington DC. Would it be best to work through the Thai consulate.

TLDR : Answer Summary
For a month-long visit to Thailand, as an American passport holder, you can enter without a visa and receive a 60-day stamp upon entry or opt for a 60-day tourist visa. If contemplating retirement in Thailand and you are over 50, you may apply for a Non-O visa before arrival. It's recommended to contact the local Thai consulate for detailed information and guidance on the required paperwork and processes.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

Well I understand that you want to leave the US and retire here . Inside Thailand the procedure is ver easy BUT you need a bank account here to show 800.000 thb.

So I guess it will be better to come in with a NON O witch gives you 99 day .. but have to bring a lot of paperwork to the Consulate ….

Chris A Turner come visit first. Thailand had a lot to offer and every area is different. You get 60 days visa exempt and you can extend it for 30 days by visiting the immigration office where you are towards the end of your initial 60 day period. It costs 1900 baht and you fill out a form and get some copies of your passport. 90 days will give you enough time to decide what you like/dislike about Thailand and if you want to stay here longer. But FIRST, come for a visit.

You are American passport holder so you could enter without a visa (visa exemption) and get stamped in for 60 days. You also could get a 60 day tourist visa. For retirement, if you are 50+ you could apply for retirement visa. Elite visa is also an option.

First task is to contact a Visa agent, such as the one that is moderating this forum, and set up a consultation. That way they can help lay out a course of action and you'll be able to get all your questions answered.

Lawrence D Jahn Why not? Anything immigration related my Visa agent gets a call. She has helped me in so many ways. Best use of money as I place a high value on my time. Definitely recommended. If you don't want to use one then that's up to you, but I'm proof they work great.

If you intend to retire it's best to enter with a Non O 90 day visa already in place and then extend it for 12 months. If you enter on a visa exempt you will need an agent or leave the country and apply for a Non O based on retirement.

It's 60 day entry without a visa. If you decide to retire in Thailand you can get the Non-O before you arrive on line from your Thai embassy, arrive, open bank account asap, deposit required funds, and apply at local immigration office for 12 month Extension.

Chris A Turner that was just a summary. You'll get more info on the Thai embassy website then you can ask the clever folks on here for extra guidance.

Lynnette Munoz.only problem is the guidance states all the facts but that's not quite what you get when you try and do it in reality. For example, just open a bank account, with everything in order I still had three refuse me, before kgrunsgri accepted me, actually one kgrunsgri branch said no and with exactly the same paperwork another kgrunsgri said yes..that for me is the biggest frustration for me in Thailand, check all the rules and then find they are enforced by different places in different ways, even one immigration officer sitting next to another can ask for something different, same as banks. I am used to it now so.don't get stressed ,.just expect it lol.

The advice given here is so often correct, until it isnt😂😂
