What steps can I take to increase my chances of getting a soft power DTV visa approved from Hanoi?

Jan 15, 2026
My soft power DTV was approved this week. I applied from Hanoi about 9 days ago.

I did not use an agent and did everything myself. Although the 3 months of banking statements was not a requirement, I still attached 3 months because it seems like they may be weighing the strength of each application against one another and going with the ones that hold more weight, also factoring in nationality and one's ability to support themselves.

Included within the application was a page at the beginning of each section, notifying the consular officer exactly what they would see.

I also split the PDF into several of the relevant sections and uploaded it to the applicable attachment area in the website. It might not mean anything, but if you want to leave no stone unturned, this is a way to show you put in extra effort.

I included a cover letter, explaining a little about myself as well as why I was interested in the soft power course I was applying to. I directly wrote that I did not intend to work for any Thai companies or compete with Thai nationals during the duration of the DTV. Also, I included how I make money to support myself, as well as what my plans were after the 12 month course ended. To put in more detail, I stated that I would continue to sign up for more soft power courses to honor the intention of the DTV. One of their main issues seems to be what people are doing after their 6-12 month course is over. This is just a way to assure the officer that you will continue to contribute to the Thai tourist economy.

Lastly, I included all airline tickets into Vietnam and Hanoi, confirming my location was in Hanoi. I included date-timestamped selfies of myself at designated areas in Hanoi. Additionally, I included receipt of accommodations in Hanoi as well as the accommodation and arrival flight I booked in Thailand.

Sidenote here, I was a bit worried due to news of what the US has done in adding Thailand on a restrictive list of 75 countries where their citizens' long-term visas would no longer be processed. The situation is volatile and unpredictable. I don't trust the US to act rationally and the ones most affected in the end may be American expats, unfortunately.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I debated posting this but I figured it would help some who were on the fence. There are way too many 'soft power rejection' posts regarding Hanoi but my experience was totally different than what's been posted online.

1.27.2026 update - I left Vietnam for Bangkok BKK Airport. Following the advice of some on this forum, I made sure to print out my Visa on an A4 size paper. Showed it to the IO and was promptly stamped in. The line was long and high season is definitely causing some backups. Now I need to figure out how to do a Certificate of Residence. I'll be going to Lak Si tomorrow to try and do that. Likely my last update on this forum. Big thank you to those who posted valuable information on the DTV Visa.

Haha no, I'm sure if I hand-wrote the letter, they would think it was Thai gibberish. Just type on Google docs, export to PDF.

EnthusiasticPineapple1088 I attached the cover letter to the front of the course documents for the soft power class I enrolled in. That seemed to be the most relevant place to put it.

Thank You for your helpful report 👍

Congratulations 👏👏👏

PRINT OUT THE EMAIL THAT HAS YOUR DTV VISA.

That's what you should do... print it out.

You may have to show PROOF of your DTV Visa to airline staff on check-in for your flight ✈️ to Thailand...even to the connecting airline staff. Or to the land border crossing entry Thai Immigration Officer.

Upon arrival into Thailand, show the DTV visa to the Thai Immigration Officer and look at the STAMP placed in your passport to be sure you are STAMPED in for 180 days.

With regards to "One of their main issues seems to be what people are doing after their 6-12 month course is over", did you give specific details about your plan or just some rough ideas? Did you enroll for 9 months course?

I enrolled in a 12 month course (Thai Cooking). The school gave me the receipt, letter of recognition, business registration, and various contacts from the school (their ID cards). The course schedule in and of itself is not very rigorous in that there is only 1 class per month. After receiving the documentation, I read over everything very carefully to ensure they spelled my entire name so that it aligned with the MRZ Zone of my passport as well as my Passport identification number. In the cover letter, I did not give any specific details, only stating that after the course ended I would explore additional soft power courses in order to align with the nature of the DTV at hand.

Congrats! I am hoping to apply for mine through Hanoi as well. I live in Saigon and there is a Thai embassy here in Saigon but I guess the school I plan to apply for said Hanoi approved better for some reason.

So someone told you that the 3 months of bank records were not needed? From everyone I’ve heard from so far they said it was required? The school for instance told me I need them when I apply.

I’m specifically waiting until the end of March because I need to hold the 500k THB in my checking account for that duration.

Many in Vietnam have been approved with funds seasoned from hours to a few weeks.

I’m curious, if someone met all the criteria and were still denied for some reason, how long is it before a person can apply to try again?

Like the OP I am even more worried as an American applying since the US just oddly put Thailand on the banned list.

You can apply right away. It is best though to try and find out what caused the rejection. Orangina's move is more about limiting Thai's travel to the states. Thailand is open to foreigners moving to LOS. Unlikely to see American applicants suffer.

Some have been saying they deposited funds to their checking account and applied a few days later and got approved in Ha Noi; others have said they got rejected even though they included 4-6 months of statements (the rejection may have been due to something else). The requirements on their official website do not say anything about duration but that you have access to 500.000 THB of liquid funds at the time of the application. 3 months is a safe bet and that's what I went with. It might be different for soft power vs. remote worker. If you do apply right after you secure the funds, it's probably best to attach some sort of explanation on where the funds came from and how you gathered them so quickly (liquidating investments)

FYI this guy is not me. I am not an agent and I'd highly advise anyone to do this themselves. Not only is it easy, but the only one you can trust in the end is yourself.
