Any reason not to be able to get my stamp at Malaysian land border when re-entering on DTV? First renewal. Thanks for any helpful answers 🙂
Answer summary
This post discusses concerns related to re-entering Thailand on a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) and the associated health insurance requirements, particularly for seniors. Several commenters express the difficulty of obtaining health insurance for older expats, sharing personal experiences and recommending various insurance companies. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding visa types, the challenges faced by expatriates over 70 years old, and the necessity of adequate health insurance when applying for long-term residency or extensions in Thailand.

My parents(mid and late 70s) used this company, which is part of Liberty Mutual. The premiums eventually became too costly, so we cancelled the policies as they thankfully never had to make any claim and have access to the Thai public health system. Note that I’m not affiliated with the insurance company in any way.

What many people don’t realise is that in Switzerland we are used to paying health insurance that it at least fr400/month and generally much higher (around THB

0 per year).

I would be surprised if you couldn’t fine a company willing to insure your relative at those levels. But, as others have mentioned, after exclusions this may not cover a lot. I would recommend talking to a couple of insurance brokers.

Jan Laurentsen WR Life puts every claim into the "pre-existing conditions drawer". Better stay away from them. I've been insured by them for 2 years. My agent warned all his customers after lots of denials.

70 seems to be a magic number and few Thai mainstream insurers will take on new cover 70+

However, with the right broker in your corner it’s certainly possible. 5M Cover minimum, 8000 room per day. Because you can expect a battle with the underwriter. Should you be fortunate enough to be in good health, no pre conditions and not on long term medication. A comprehensive medical is certainly helpful convincing an insurer that you are a worthwhile risk. You don’t need optical, dental or out patient cover. Negotiating a higher deductable will take down the cost.

I once used Cigna and they were truly dreadful.

The obvious alternative is to self insure. I would want 2.5-3M in the bank as a contingency minimum. Up to you.

KPT for expatriates outside EU. But it is a private contract and it could be expensive for a 75 years old. Check with them.

Dana Lissy I was 63 when I wanted KPT and they want all medical histories from the past 5 years originally written by your physician, just to reject you at the end only because of some surgeries and/or past cataract surgery. So not a good idea and very expensive by the way

It's possible but it will be very expensive and have a lot of exclusions. It would probably be more economical to put money aside and self insure.

Des Dp I think this guy has a point . To give you an example of cost . A friend of mine had Bladder cancer . Got full treatment with op and chemotherapy. Got cured . £42k . So that’s an example

Des Dp in that case better to have some millions in the bank... and no known illness or treatment...

And if you do find one, you have no guarantee of future premium rises. Despite no claims Cigna tripled my premiums and said my birthday put me in a higher risk pool. Now I pay as I go.

Stephen Myhill but how to get resident permit without health insurance ?? Seems it is obligatory

Branko van Zanten there is no resident permit. Get a 90 day Non 'O' visa at embassy in Switzerland then convert to annual extensions in Thailand. No need for health insurance

Takiep74 correct, commonly known as retirement visa, do yourself or get a reputable visa agent to do

Many Thai insurance companies won't take on new customers aged 75 or over and they usually stop providing cover at all once the insured hits 90. I seem to remember one taking on new customers up to the age of 80 but I'm afraid I can't remember their name
