Urgent question if anyone has advice. A German friend with a Croatia passport is stranded at Don Muang and isn’t being allowed in. He was previously in Thailand with a 60 day tourist visa that he extended once for extra 30 days. He left to travel in Malaysia and Indonesia for 3 weeks and is coming back to Thailand for one week before going back to Germany. He had asked at thai immigration and they said this wouldn’t be a problem. Now after arriving at Don Muang airport and trying to enter Thailand, the border official says he needs to leave thailand, get a visa from a thai embassy and then come back. No reason given except his « visa was expired »

What’s the deal? What can he do? Would just flying to another Thai airport be a bad idea?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A German friend holding a Croatian passport was denied entry at Don Muang Airport due to an expired visa. Despite prior confirmation from immigration that re-entry would not be an issue, upon arrival, officials stated he needed a visa before entering Thailand again. The situation highlights that Croatian passport holders require a visa in advance for entry into Thailand, as they are not eligible for a visa on arrival. He has the option to return to Indonesia to apply for a new visa or head back to Germany. The incident serves as a reminder for travelers to research visa requirements relevant to their nationality before traveling.

Seeing that the problem is solved, he is denied entry on a Croatian Passport with the reason: No visa. He is flying now to Indonesia. If he likes to come back into Thailand he has to apply for a Visa there. Thanks for the question and update.

It amazes me that people just get on a plane without doing the most basic research to ensure they have all the required travel docs/permissions etc...

A simple 5 second google search would have identified the visa requirements for any passport holder coming to Thailand...

Anyway, lesson learnt...the hard way

Thanks, you’re correct but maybe you don’t need to bother moralizing when someone is in a rough situation.

It depends on the reason why he is denied entry and that is not in the story.

A good example of needing to do your homework before you travel.

His options are, like they say, either go home and apply for another visa or go to another country where he can get a visa on arrival that also has a Thai embassy where he can apply for a new Thai tourist visa.

Fanny Gaijin That would explain it. Being from Croatia, he has to get a visa in advance of traveling to Thailand. There is no option for visa on arrival for people from Croatia.

They just told him his visa was expired. But he knows that. He wants a new one.

Ok. Make sense. Hopefully Fanny can shine some light on that?

Was it bad luck or would it have made a difference if he entered Thailand by bus? Why was he rejected?

They said just that his visa was expired

He has to fly out, depending on Immigration to other country or back home in Germany.
