What online USA tax filing service have you actually used, and now recommend ? πŸ˜ƒ

I have troubles with the following online services :

1) FreeTaxUSA does Not support customers or preparers who are living outside the USA when they file their taxes, even if they live in a US territory ( attached pic 1 😿 ) ;

2) the Jackson Hewitt website detects my IP outside the States and blocks me from opening an account ( access denied, error 16, attached pic 2 😿 ) ;

3) the H&R Block website has no option for entering a Thai phone number to receive a verification code ( attached pic 3 😿 ) ;

4) TurboTax charged me 139 USD last year for my 1099 form, this year I am willing to try another online service for less. 😿

TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats are experiencing challenges with various US online tax filing services while living overseas. FreeTaxUSA, TurboTax, H&R Block, and OLT are among the recommended services, with users suggesting the use of a VPN and US-based phone numbers to workaround some of the access issues. Some users shared their positive experiences with specific services like HR Block Expat Tax Service and TaxAct for non-residents. However, there are warnings against using certain services like Expats Online due to poor customer service and excessive fees. The discussion reveals a common desire among expats to find reliable and affordable tax solutions that cater to their unique situation.

I use TaxAct for a non resident 1040NR return for the past several years. One of the few that allows non residents to e-file. If you use the link from the IRS website you can file for free if your AGI is less than $89k.

Whatever service you use, don't use expats online. They are absolutely woeful. Took 4 months to do my return last year and charged me excess costs twice before they were complete - what use to cost me 329 usd for return and fbar suddenly was over 1,000 usd. between the three seperate invoices they sent me. Very disorganised and rude customer service. I do not recommend. This year going with someone else - will cost the same but at least they were upfront about it. I'll wait to see how they do before giving a recommend for them though.

FreeTaxUSA has worked well filing from overseas for several years running. The key is using a VPN and a US number to receive the login verification codes (Google Voice is fine). One important caveat: it does not support Form 2555 or the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, so if that applies to your situation, you will need to look elsewhere.

TurboTax Premier is currently $82 on Amazon. I paid $89 for it back in February, so the price has come down a little.

If you have money in a foreign bank account under $10k, TurboTax will handle the correct forms for you automatically. Over $10k, I'm not sure what happens, so you may want to look into that.

A couple of notes from my experience:

β€’ I did NOT use a VPN while filing.

β€’ If you're using AI to help with your taxes, be prepared to push back and ask follow-up questions. Misunderstandings do happen and you sometimes have to dig to get the right answer. Always ask for verifiable responses, though with taxes there are gray areas.

I was thinking of using one of the expat tax services, but it would have cost $1000+ with all the forms that I needed.

As Todd said, VPN connected to somewhere in the US. A lot of US-based sites won't work outside the US without VPN.

Also, invest in a US-based VOIP number (or keep a low-cost US number with Mint, Boost, etc depending on how much you return).

Micah Gitlin Thank you for sharing ! πŸ™ But still, you cannot receive verification codes in text messages on your US mobile number while you live outside the States, am I correct !? πŸ€”

Yaoyu Brancheau You can. I use Google Voice to send/receive texts all the time.

Some services (usually banking types) require a non-VOIP provider, which can be a bit more complicated, but not as common.

Yaoyu Brancheau strange you were charged $139 to submit . Couldnt you upload the 1099 from your broker? Free version worked fine adding additional income from 1099s. Anyhow good luck.

Todd Capron That's how much TurboTax charges, they import the 1099 forms from my broker, I can upload by myself as well.

I'm just tired of the fact that they have dramatically raised the price since 2021. πŸ₯Ή

If you have an AI service like Claude or Open AI it will walk you through the whole thing even gathering the forms you need and help you fill them out.

not that I can recall. I originally registered because it was one of the few free options that supported the foreign earned income credit and I found many people posted and using it if they were expats.

Brandon, do you happen to know how much OLT charges for filing 1099 forms !? πŸ€”

They are mainly from capital gains, and H&R Block、TurboTax dramatically increase their charges when 1099 forms are involved. 😩
