TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the clarification of the "2 times visa exemption per calendar year" rule in Thailand, primarily for travelers entering the country. Participants explain that traditionally, it refers to being able to enter on visa exemption (60 days + 30 days extension) twice within a year, ideally by land border crossings. However, recent changes in regulations appear to allow for unlimited entries, which has caused some confusion among expats. Key points include the requirement of leaving the country for a certain duration to reset the visa exemption count, and the differing interpretations of immigration rules by officials at border crossings.

This is the official London Thailand Embassy rules for visa exemption

@Eddie *****
unfortunately the embassy isn't responsible for the rules or enforcement. Many of their sites are incorrect

@Todd ********
Well I would rather belive the embassy than all this on Facebook. Having travelled to Thailand for the last 30 years I have found the rules on the London Embassy to be correct.

that's a bit of dishonesty there mate. If you have been to thailand over 30 years, you would be well aware of the issues. It's not exactly a secret. The first sentence for instance, is false. "UK ordinary passport holders can travel to Thailand without visa for no longer than 60 days (maximum 2 times/year)." There is no such maximum of 2 times/year. Never has been. And seems unlikely to be enforced tomorrow. If you fear this, great. Stay home. But happily, most are familiar with this by now.

@Todd ********
maybe a diplomatic passport does not need visa exempt! So the wording is correct. By the way it's all over the forums regarding 2 entries per year.

So maybe you are not the expert you think you are, have a nice day.

@Eddie *****
simply stating the facts. The embassies don't make the rules. OR enforce. That's the job of Thai immigration.... The only limit is two land border entries per year. And even that may have changed today

@Todd ********
I went 2 times by air to malaisya, up in the morning back in the afternoon, by the second time i had to go explain what i was doing, all at dmk.
Todd *********
@Jan ***************
not sure what your point is? Immigration asked you questions? Ie - they did their job. And then let you in right?
Sabine *********
The official Answer is now online. Thaiembassy.com
Todd *********
@Sabine ********
hopefully, however this is not the official answer. This is a Thai embassy site, not Royal Thai Immigration who will actually make and enforce the rules
Sabine *********
Oh i apply for the DTV pay and i am good for 180 days.
Sabine *********
I can enter 2 x for 60 days and extend the 60 days with 30 days. Thats 5 months the lenght of my stay
Horea *****

@Sabine ********
is 2x(60visa+30ext)=180

Todd *********
@Sabine ********
Horea just gave you the correct answer
Tony ******
It’s not unlimited
Tony ******
Here we go
Kool *******
Tony Stan as of the 15th of July it is now unlimited. You are posting outdated info.
Kool *******
That 2 times crossing the land borders in a calendar year ended yesterday. It is now back to unlimited.
Max *************
I'm quite sure there are immigration officers working at land border crossings that knows about the "2 border runs per calendar year" limit,but I'm also sure there are officers that haven't got a clue. It's a bit of a gamble I guess.
Wayne *********
With the new 60 days there is also no limit on land crossing now. Was posted by Tod in the visa forum
Wayne *********
It goes by the entry date not departure date so 1 can overlap into a new year but it's not counted as entry because you entered the previous year
Lisa ********************
It seems to have been scrapped, since the 60 day visa exemption. Now unlimited entries, it appears.
Sabine *********
@Lisa *******************
so you say i can stay 60 days go out 48 hours an Come back another 60 days go out again for 48 hours and again 60 days aslong as i stay under 180 days in Total?
Graham ******
@Sabine ********
there is no 180 day rule
Lisa ********************
@Sabine ********
you can get a 30 day extension with each 60 day stamp, then leave and repeat.
Sabine *********
@Lisa *******************
where do i get the extensies? Cause if i pay for the visa 180 days its euro 350 go on visarun is cheaper
Lisa ********************
@Sabine ********
you get 30 day extension at your nearest Immigration Office. 1900bt
Horea *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lisa *******************
so get first 60 days and another 30 days at immigration office. How about border run? How is this applyable?
Tullio *******
@Sabine ********
from the early reports this is what it seems….
Bob *********
The real answer is you need to go to another country for 10 to 30 days to prove your not trying to live in Thailand; Everything becomes easy after that
Graham ******
@Bob ********
because people living in Thailand don't take holidays?
Garry ********
@Bob ********
crap done land border crossing many times in 17 years and only stayed 1 day than returned.
Ning ******
@Bob ********
it will pop out on their screen, how many times in total you been in and out....
Max *************
@Bob ********
That's far from correct.
Ning ******
the 2 times is by land (like cambodia or lao or malaysia) the 3rd will depends on luck.
Aake **********
@Ning *****
calenderyear
Horea *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
not by land. I mean by plane
Jan **********
@Horea ****
it doesn't apply to "by plane".
Horea *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
so i can stay 180 days per calendaristic year in the country with no matter how many visa exemptions i take arriving by plane?
Todd *********
@Horea ****
or 365 days if you wish, up to u
Ning ******
It depends on your luck, sometimes you will meet a angry one and he or she can refuse to let you in. some might ask you to show a return ticket or hotel booking or if you got
*****
b cash. some will ask, if you are working in thailand etc etc....
Andrew ***********
@Horea ****
dont believe everything you read on FB is the answer. To many FB experts who think they know but don't.
Brandon ************
@Horea ****
every entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer. If they feel you are abusing the system or you don't look like a tourist to them, they can still deny entry.
