My experience with DTV in Manila, PH

Hello friends. First, thank you to those in this group who shared their experiences and how they set up their documents. It was very helpful throughout this very nerve-racking experience.

Approved yesterday evening, no interview. Workcation category, US citizen, self-employed (freelancer/portfolio route, no employer). Paying it forward with the full breakdown and my actual documents.

Timeline:

* July 19 — arrived in Manila, submitted same day (a Sunday, so the clock really started Monday)

* July 24, ~11:24 AM — request for additional documents (work samples, client communications, links)

* July 24 — sent everything back within the hour

* July 27 — status changed to Pending Approval

* August 5, just before 7 PM — Approved via email

So about 12 working days total, 6 working days after the document request. No interview, no second request.

Documents (redacted copies in a drive): I have all of my redacted files in .pdf form for view and as an example for anyone upon request. I provided the link originally, but perhaps that was why this post was originally rejected(?). Thought it would be helpful, especially for anyone new to this process like myself.

The reasoning behind how I built each one, because the structure mattered as much as the contents:

Current location. Entry stamp + boarding pass. That's it. US citizens enter PH visa-free so there's no "Philippine visa" to show — the stamp is the answer to that requirement. Nobody questioned it.

Financial evidence. This is where most rejections happen, so I over-engineered it. The requirement is 500,000 THB equivalent MAINTAINED for 3 months — Manila's January 2026 guidelines changed the wording from "last three months" to "maintained over the last 3 months," and that word matters. An ending balance is not enough. I used one account, sole name, held well above threshold the whole window, no big deposits during the 90 days. Cover page stated the lowest balance in the window upfront so the officer didn't have to hunt for it. Separate currency conversion page with a dated rate and the source named, showing the margin. Do not make them do math.

Purpose and Work. The one I redid completely, and honestly the thing I'd tell people to spend the most time on. My rule after the rebuild: every single page had to be third-party verified, a government record, a platform record, or something I signed. If the evidence on a page was weaker than the claim above it, the page came out. I cut a lot. A bank statement that ended at $0 (was there to show one income source — all the officer would see is a zero). An income-by-year table that read like a decline. Anything I couldn't back with a document. Led with my strongest verified income (platform verification letter + IRS form), not with the newest venture I was most excited about but couldn't evidence yet. That last part hurt but it was right.

The document request. Don't panic when this comes. Mine arrived with a typo in it, which tells you it's a template they send out, not something an officer wrote about my file specifically. My honest read now: Manila probably sends this to most portfolio-route applicants no matter what's in the original submission. So if you get it, it very likely doesn't mean you did anything wrong — it means you're a freelancer and this is their standard second look. Mine asked for work samples, client communications (they literally say you can blur sensitive parts), and links. I sent published pieces, a script excerpt, real correspondence with a commercial counterparty, and one clean page of clickable links. Back to them in under an hour, complete, all at once. Each request resets their processing clock, so a slow or partial reply costs you twice.

On agencies. I looked at ISSA Compass early on and decided against. When I compared their document checklist against what the embassy actually publishes, they wanted noticeably more than Manila requires. I'm sure they get people approved, but the official requirement list is short and public, and adding unrequested documents is risk, not safety — every extra page is another thing that can contradict something. I did it myself with a lot of research instead. Cheaper, and I understood my own file completely when the questions came.

Things I'd tell July-me:

* If you're a freelancer/creator: "portfolio" means THE ACTUAL WORK. I submitted verification letters, tax forms, analytics, payout records — and not one single thing I'd actually made. No video, no article, no script. Their document request was basically them asking "ok but can we see the work?" If your income comes from platforms, your instinct will be to show the official-looking money documents. Show those AND the work itself. Might have saved me a round (though given the template, maybe not — see above).

* Check the guidelines DATE. The June 2025 Manila PDF still circulates and the financial wording changed in the Jan 2026 version.

* Portal uploads are 3MB per slot, JPG/JPEG/PDF. Build your PDFs knowing that.

* Never fabricate anything to fill a gap. I had a weak spot (new venture, no client contracts yet) and the answer was to demote it to one honest sentence, not to manufacture evidence. Everything in my file could survive being checked, which is why I slept fine after submitting.

* Name must match your passport EXACTLY everywhere, including middle name. They cancel without refund for discrepancies.

* Stay in the Philippines until it's decided. The 30-day stamp is your real deadline, not their processing time — plan the BI extension early if the math gets tight. Mine got tight.

Happy to answer questions. Good luck everyone 🙏
