TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a retirement visa (specifically the NON-O category) in Thailand, you must provide evidence of foreign currency funds transferred to Thailand. This is crucial as the Thai authorities require proof that funds originate from overseas. If you did not transfer the money directly from a bank to a bank, you will need to show this in another way. Many people find success using services like Wise for transfers, as it often categorizes funds as international transfers. Additionally, you can make a small transaction in a Thai bank right before the larger transfer, which can provide you with a receipt indicating the funds were transferred from abroad.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

You need to go to yoir (thai) bank, and make a minuscule transaction a moment before that. They will give you a paper stating when the money came from outside Thailand.

Bangkok bank knows that. I’ve been to 3-4 different branches and they immediately know about it.

Most people seem to use Wise to transfer the funds using the code for purchasing a property. It then shows as an international transfer (unless this has changed again).

they actually now have a category that says “ sending money for retirement” or something similar.

I don’t know for sure because I always transfer my money to Bangkok bank in New York and then they transferred to my local branch in Thailand. I would assume it does show as an out of country transfer because that category has not always been available. But I would check with Wise to be sureor you can transfer a small amount through Wise to your Thailand bank and see how it shows up.

makes sense Graham. I presumed it would revert at some point, I just hadn't seen any comments stating it had happened. Is the wording 'funds for long term stay in Thailand' or similar?

This is a requirement for converting to non-O retirement visa in Thailand. You must be able to show the funds you are using came from overseas. If you cannot show this in some way or your funds will not be accepted for the visa application.
