Hello! As most DTV holders don't have Thai local bank accounts, may I ask what are the usual ways to pay rent to landlord for apartments in Bangkok?
Answer summary
DTV holders in Bangkok have various options for paying rent since many do not have local Thai bank accounts. Common methods include using international money transfer services such as Wise and Revolut, making cash payments, or depositing money directly into the landlord's account by visiting a bank branch. Some also utilize apps like TrueMoney to handle payments via QR codes. A unique method observed was transferring money to a local Thai friend who then pays the landlord, highlighting the flexibility and creativity some find necessary in navigating the local banking system. Cash payments often provide advantages, such as reduced rent.

Not sure of your home country, but I check my home banks exchange rate against what the local changers are offering, my bank is always better. Then I get the max out of an ATM and accept the 350bht fee

I don't understand these questions. If you are on DTV, you aren't getting any income from Thailand so your money is on a foreign bank account. If you were allowed to have a Thai bank account, how would you get money on the account? By bank transfer from your foreign account, right? So the same way, you transfer money to your landlord's account from your non Thai account.

Agree 100 percent, the only advantage of a Thai bank account is the possibility to pay with QR.

I agree the QR payment is an advantage, but even if I was allowed to have a bank account, it would be a bit of an overkill to open one just for that.

For everyone answering cash… do you just withdraw cash from local Thai ATM using your foreign bank card? Thats a lot of extra fee…

Make sure you select 'without conversion' on the ATM, it saves you quite a bit of money each time compared to the other option.

depends on what you see as a lot of money.

When you withdraw maximum it is about 1 percent, the same the exchange rate of Thai baht sometimes changes in a day and nobody complains about that.

@Letao *****
Yeah I would use the ATM and withdraw the maximum. I see it as the rent being 250THB extra to account for the ATM withdrawal

I hear that Aeon ATM only charges THB150 per withdraw. Try that maybe!

If that ATM is closest for you, just try.

For saving 100 baht I would not spend any extra effort to find such an ATM.

Cash has always worked for me.

For everywhere else you might be able to use Wise.

Ask your landlord.

I got friendly with a Thai lady so I transfer money to her and she is now my ATM. She transfers the rent from her Thai bank account. Gives me cash when I want to. I only need to give her affection in return.

Hong Kong's Faster Payment System (FPS) is integrated with Thailand's PromptPay. Launched on December 4, 2023, the FPS x PromptPay Link enables cross-border, real-time QR code payments for travelers between the two locations.

Hong Kong residents can use supported mobile banking apps or e-wallets (such as HSBC, BOCHK, Bank of East Asia, and Octopus) to scan PromptPay QR codes at over 8 million merchants in Thailand.

The service is designed for retail merchant payments, not for transferring funds to personal accounts in Thailand so this only works if your landlord is a company with a QR code for payment.

I think more typically, people do bank transfer- Wise supports bank transfers to most Thai bank accounts, so can transfer to the landlord's bank account. This way, the landlord gets the exact amount in THB you specify.

Some landlords may take cards but not many, and I suspect the ones that do would add a % to cover the fees.
