I agree with the electric transformer idea. They blow out sometimes and sound like a really loud gun. It definitely startles you. I had one blow outside the Bangkok condo recently. Very loud.

In Pattaya, there was an explosive sound yesterday while I was upstairs at the Starbucks at Tukom plaza. Everyone was was alarm!

Looked out the window and then went back to their coffee. My GF said there was a bright flash, but I didn't see anything looking at my computer screen. My heart definitely skipped a beat lol.
