Hello everybody!

I would like to get a Thai drivers license.

I have a valid American drivers license and IDP as well. I have a retirement visa in Thailand. I have made an appointment with LDT already which is coming up in March.

From what I understand, I need to do these before my appointment:

1. Watch a video and answer test questions online.

2. Get a health certificate from a physician.

3. Get the residence certificate from immigration.

My questions:

1. what is the name of the test? I can’t Google it without knowing the name or if you have the site URL that would be fine as well.

2 can you recommend a clinic in Rawai for the health certificate?

3. Exactly what documents do I need to bring to immigration to get the residence certificate?

TLDR : Answer Summary
This discussion centers on the process of obtaining a Thai driver's license for expats, specifically an American who holds a retirement visa. Key points include the necessary preparations before the appointment at the Land Transport Department (LDT) such as watching a mandatory video and obtaining health and residence certificates. Participants share their experiences, mentioning required documents, recommended clinics for health certificates, and the online test process. You're worrying too much. Don't worry. any clinic.

go to immigration they have what you need. I don't remember what I had to bring but bring your passport to bring copies of your passport you'll need to sign them in blue ink. three copies I think.

I took the test when I got there.

then you have to do some exercises to show that you can see colors and can stop on a red light. don't be the first one in line so you can watch and see what they're doing.

make sure you make an appointment.

I had lots of troubles in rayong. I have a cdl, with a bunch of endorsements, and a motorcycle endorsement. They said my license is only good for big trucks. Not cars or motorcycles. I showed them, but they wouldnt listen. I thought they wanted to shake me down. But they didn get any money. I had to watch a 5 hour video, take 2 50 question written tests and a driving test on motorcycle and a car. All free. But took up quite a bit of time.

When I got my first Thai liscence it was straight forward no video only 4 simple tests sitting in a chain pressing a pedal and buttons, 2 year liscence. After the 2 years was up done the online test now got 5 year liscence. If you have a motorbike liscence tell them you also want one. You only need to do the test once to get both. Copy all documents as you need a copy for the car and the bike.

You can google any question , google will try to interpret and is usually right

You don’t need to know spacifics to find answers

Thats’ what google does

When it doesn’t figure it our correctly, try rephrasing or adding detail

This answer was just asking: “online drivers test in Thailand “

A couple of scam posts were the first result ( phoney IDP scams) but the right answer was about the third article

You don't need an agent , most DLT places have walk in appointments daily , so my advise is go get all the documents and health stuff ready do the online coarse save the QR code at the end . Go to the office hand in your papers if your lucky there maybe space that day if not mine was 3 days later . Now on the website for booking it was full for months.

สก็อต อัลการ์ rayong has a waiting list for months. No walk ins. So i would assume every transportation office is different.

Ensure that a TM30 has been filed where you live, then go to immigration and request the resident certificate

I went in person last month to the DLT in Bangkok with a medical cert, cert of residence, passport and relevant copies, driving licence and IPD. I got the medical cert at a random clinic in the street. It was basically a blood pressure test. (I needed my passport at the clinic.)

(The DLT pushed the IDP back accross the desk. Didn’t look at it or make a copy)

The DLT gave me a link to the website below which was 5 videos and some questions and an appointment to come back in two days. The completed questions gave me a QR code to present on my return.

Second visit I presented the barcode. Took a series of easy physical tests and walked out with my Thai licence within an hour.

Edit. I had downloaded an app called DLT smart queue to make an appointment. It didn’t work for me in Bangkok which is why I went in person.

John Wenman You Def right about the IDP the lady told my wife where did he get this from I told her from a online site in Phuket, she said it's not worth the paper it's on or equivalent in Thai. She said it needs to have a photo not a printed photo.

Go to your DLT and ask them there. They are usually very helpful. Not sure why you need an appointment so far in advance.
