Just went to renew my visa thai wife extension. New rules they don't want 4 photos of us in the house they want 6 (2 outside and 4 inside).one of the photos must be us in the bedroom! Am I missing something or is this going too far?
Answer summary
The user expresses frustration over new requirements for renewing their Thai spousal visa, which now mandates six photos instead of four, including one photo in the bedroom. This has sparked a lively discussion among expats, with various experiences and opinions shared regarding the increasing scrutiny of marital legitimacy by Thai immigration. Many commenters agree that these demands can feel excessive, and share anecdotes of differing requirements across provinces.

Next it will be one of you squatting on the Asian toilet with a pink water jug in your left hand and your passport in your right.
if your 80 and your wife is mid 20s. you can sort of understand where they're coming from. I know the example ages are extreme but perhaps you can understand the explanation. do as they say and you should be okay.
In some cases the police are visiting the farang at his address to ensure the relationship is geniune. Of course it could still be a sham relationship but in rural areas that's usually not the case. The opportunities for acquiring a mia noi or two is more difficult.
My Immigration Office always want six pics. One at the front gate with house number in view, the second outside the front door, the third in the living room, the fourth in the kitchen, fifth in front of bedroom wardrobe with male and female clothes in view and the sixth one of us sat on the marital bed.
Last renewal the Officer complained that the pics were taken with a selfie stick and I was told to get a neighbour to take the pics next time.......wifey was not amused.
Fucking rediculous !! I’m planning a trip there for about a month but I’m not jumping through hoops to get in to the country ! There are other countries close by much cheaper and easy to get into! As much as I’d like to visit Thailand they can fuck themselves if they make it too hard for people to visit !!
An immigration officer from the states can ask for the same thing of couples when one is immigrating. In fact, can ask very personal questions. What side of the bed they sleep on etc. Can even show up at their home and look in their closets for co-habiting. Doesn't surprise me in the least (prior immigration officer for naturalization to the US).
Just do what they want. Why even stress about it. Mostly in the pictures you provide of you both inside, they are looking at the room, not you two, to judge if it actually looks like you are both living there together. When they have questions about it, from the photos, then during the under consideration period they will schedule an actual visit, and even go so far as asking your neighbors if you both live there. That is the main purpose of them wanting a number of pictures inside. If they are satisfied by the pictures that where you live shows that you both do live there, then no visit. We haven't had any visit ever, in over ten years.
They should ask for social media accounts, need 6 family posts a year, spread out through the year. More reliable way and less intrusive to verify indeed a family
come on wankers, its so easy to get here, it takes me 1 hour to prepare nd the4 next day 3-4 hours to go to the bank and after the imigration and I have my extension
Sometimes they can make it difficult I remember 1 year I was renting a house from a Thai couple and the Dad died and the house was in his name and not the wife's so they wouldn't accept her ID and wanted a copy of the man's death certificate!
Although I dont think 4 vs 6 photos makes a difference, in the grand scheme of things they are trying to root out the fraudulent marriages. A lot of criminals and scammers marry thai women to gain access to long term visas to continue their criminal career in thailand.
Sham marriages are more a problem and really checked by immigration vs other visa types. My mate recently married his misses after 25 years and the switch from retirement visa to marriage was challenging yet accomplished.
Yes, I did mine in February .And when they came to do the visit he actually took the pictures of or sitting on the bed, not in the bed and pictures outside the house. And with the family that's just being for nowadays to rule out then. That are trying to con the system. If you have nothing too hide, just go along with it
Nathan Schultz The same in Krabi last year, this year all change, they wanted a further 2 inside the house. Rules are changing between provinces and also year to year.
No, I had to do similar for my retirement extension last month, 2 outside the house with number visible, 2 inside the house, they had to be 2 pictures per page, not 4 separate., they also said I had to balance book on my head while they did my photo at the office
I have 14 extensions of stay by marriage and I have always had to provide 10 photos with wife and I in them, basically in every room of the house including walk-in closet, one of house address plate and one of overall house. When they used to do the house visits, they would take photos again of us in every room. Now house visit not required after wife turned 45.
Sue Heimchen not if they ate happy with photos . I think that more to do with the agent tho . If doing the visa yourself you probs have the visit . Part of living here is keeping up with the rule changes ect . They love us jumping the hoops 🤣 12 years I've never had a home or office visit but on occasion had to add photos or replace photos to comply with their wishes . But yes bedroom kitchen outside showing villa name or number ect . Office photos name plate ect ect give them 10 photos they want 12 . Think its a thai thing 🤣🤣🤣
Opportunity to make it really weird for them. I remember a brief period when delivery drivers were required to take a photo of the package with the recipient. Thai people made it super weird and that stopped quickly. There were some hilarious 😂 photos during that time.
SweetBarbecue exactly as with security in airports, at concerts and visa regulations its the bad people who have made the need to create the rules & inconvenient the inoccent
Bill McGrath they will reuse the other empty page for someone else, as it happens often - you get a document and on the other side is someone else's passport pic
It’s really not hard, I wouldn’t say it’s “too far”. The process for marriage visa is pretty straight forward and simple, especially when comparing to the requirements for spousal visas in our home countries. Yes, immigration officers can be pedantic and make the process frustrating, especially because these updates are rarely announced or communicated proactively.
I don’t see the point in being so upset about taking two extra photos for your visa. Are we that lazy that taking two extra photos is a deal breaker? It feels like many foreign spouses expect the visa to be essentially handed to us. I understand frustration with lack of communication or clarity in requirement updates, but the process itself it still pretty straightforward and simple.
RelaxingKangaroo7810 Lmfao, no I just accept that I am not a Thai immigration official and I do not make the rules. Why make life more difficult for no one else but myself and spitting my dummy out like the rest of you lot? 😂
The annual wife and bedroom shots I can see the inside logic... they use themselves as the control sample which features a regular merry-go-round of Mia nois...
BronzeHummingbird2672 Australia is easy . Really I went through it . Never once any officer show up . Once you got the visa . After awhile 12 mths I think you good to go for ever and will get a pension ,and Medicare and can work at normal tax rates
Trevor Rickard Then leave. You have the freedom to leave! No one’s forcing you to stay in Thailand. If it’s that “shit” why the fuck do you want to be here anyway? Or do you just complain because you’re a miserable, entitled foreigner who wants a visa handed to him? No need to actually respond, your previous comment already made the answer very evident.
Next year they will only won't 1. Everytime I have done my visa every year it's the same story. Seems to be more about immigration quotas, depends how the officer doing your form feels, if you are rude to them they add more random requirements on. My bet is you did not wai them.
Had a marriage visa for 7 years and just renew 3 weeks ago came to our villa took 4 photos and filled paperwork in took no more than 10 minutes filled paperwork on the patio outside and never once in 7 time ask to go inside
Had to give photos from the bedroom and other locations in and around the house in Bangkok, and now in Petchaburi ( Cha Am ).
I would think this is the norm going forward for most offices.
You should always go a solid month or so in advance to get a updated list of the required supporting documents before actually going in for the application.
Petchaburi doesn't even allow you to do it without booking a date in advance after checking your documents.
Phil Hiscocks My wife and sisters were chatting to immigration on the home visit and apparently its just like the West. Farangs get into arranged marriages so they can set up businesses, live in the country, work and so forth. I suppose immigration are just trying to cover their butts. It is a work up each year 🙏🏼
Not new, maybe just new to your office. Phuket now does a video call on Line and they want a third party doing the video of you outside, then in the living room, bedroom, dining area and kitchen.
Jim McGowan This is only for your first application for non-o. Phuket haven’t asked me for a video call in three years, only for the initial application.
BronzeHummingbird2672 it was actually to change from a visa exempt entry to an O. Been here for 20 years, on O-A and O visas. I've seen it all. Three years ago they stopped accepting our US marraige certificate after ten years. I had to leave the country and come back visa exempt then change to an O based on retirement. So I did a video interview. They did it again this year when I didn't have time to get a visa online and had to change visa types again. Extension they just said come back tomorrow and pick it up. My wife has a US Green Card so we have to be in the US or she can lose it. It's not easy living in two countries.
Gordon Kilpatrick 6 outfit changes and maybe 2 hair styles 7th outfit if going to the bank and or IO. Trip to Starbucks for more photos. Post on social media.
Patrick Mauser what point? It’s their country. What does a Thai person have to do to visit your homeland. What kind of hoops do they have to jump through. Always the most lucky with the woe is me story
Not really, every year, when I go to renew, the guy will say, “oh, you haven’t got this “new” form with you. I say “oh, I’ve never heard of it” He gives me the new form, I fill it in, he’s happy, I get my “extension” I’m happy. Of course I could complain and put on a show, what would be the end result of that one!!! 😂😂😂👍
Jay Cutler Wouldn’t call it crazy when it’s just a couple of pictures. People have and do get married purely for visas, so it’s only logical they have these kinds of requirements in place. All you have to do is stand there and take a picture, not hard. To get spousal visas in western countries as a Thai is far more difficult than it is for is to get our non-o visas in Thailand.
Count yourself lucky some immigration offices come right to the house, look inside and talk to the neighbours to see what kind of foreigner you are - it’s likely to tighten up more
James Green my local office wanted photos AND they showed up for a tour of our home. Which did include a trip to the bedroom to make sure our photos were real.
They also wanted a witness to be present to confirm we did actually stay at the location, and that we were indeed a couple.
That is exactly why next year I am not going to renew my Thai wife and go back to retirement. Each office makes their own rules and you just have to grin and bear it.
Alan Suiter I did the same. I switched back to retirement. Have more control over my situation and sure don't have to rely on some neighbors to be a witness as well as the stupid photos. I had lady tell me to retake my photos and smile in them. I told her let's see if police agree with her. My wife called police on her for abusing power. It was fun to watch her squirm and supervisor took control and said everything was fine. Now with retirement in just renew in jomtien. I go for month and that immigration office is so easy. They seem not to play games.
Alan Suiter I give them pictures outside showing house and address, pictures with neighbors and pictures inside on sofa, I draw a libe and tell them our bedroom is private space, I do not let them enter the bedroom or give pictures of bedroom. Not entirely happy but they give in and respect my wishes. All the paperwork was in order so they didn't push the issue. I get tired of them trying to change the rules every year, mostly just give them what they want, but made them understand there are some lines are going too far. Luckily the guy backed off and accepted what we had.
Alan Suiter you stopped renewing your Thai wife? How is that? What did you do before, did you send her to the hairdresser and to the Botox-and-Silicone department ?
Alan Suiter It depends on the end goal. If you want to apply for citizenship based on your marriage, I wouldn’t recommend transferring to a retirement visa because you need to have a minimum of three years of work permit and tax filing to be eligible. If citizenship isn’t something you aim for, then retirement can be more beneficial for some.
EnthusiasticPanda1415 actually I've asked my wife and agent if they wanna see us f..ING too. Ridiculous I have to do this amount of paperwork every year. I expected it would the first year. Nope...4 years married, 11 years together - oh, let's check if they are real. Like if the 2000 photos a year we have is not enough.
Go to Amphur every year to confirm you didn't get divorced - huh? You don't have computers? Go to Immi with a witness who has to be Thai in the district you live. They are nuts, meanwhile hundreds of thousands Thais work ilegally overseas
