Saw folk asking about post-pandemic visa run options so have updated my recent experience (17th August) with the Penang visa run/application. It's now easy to cross the border, no visa needed for Malaysia (unlike Thailand's other borders) and the Thai consulate is up and running as usual. It now takes 2-days to process visas (I'm near sure this is new), and the requirements feel stricter. The usual agents that did the legwork from Chulia etc are either out of business or charging a lot more. But it's easy just to turn up as usual and it's really just a simple Thai visa run. Have updated full details here:
TLDR : Answer Summary
The author shares an update on the visa run process to Penang, Malaysia, post-COVID-19, noting that no visa is required for Malaysia. The Thai consulate is operational, with a 2-day visa processing time, which may indicate stricter requirements than before. Challenges include the closure or increased costs of local visa agent services. However, the process remains simple for those willing to do it themselves.
