Im relocating to Thailand using my DTV but I want to maintain my UK mobile number without the crazy costs.

Has anyone used any of these VOIP services where you can port your number to them, and via their app you can make and receive calls / sms messages.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses various methods to maintain a UK mobile number while relocating to Thailand on a DTV visa. Suggestions include using VOIP services such as OpenPhone or DEVYCE, downgrading to a low-cost UK sim plan with providers like Lebara or GiffGaff, and opting for a dual-SIM unlocked phone to manage both Thai and UK numbers seamlessly. The importance of regular usage to keep the number active is highlighted, especially for banking needs.

excuse me! Who do you think you are?

I'm traveling to Thailand using my DTV and asking a question many others have faced, it's one of the best places to ask such a question.

If it wasn't relevant to the group the admin wouldn't have approved it!

Are you an admin? No!

Did an admin approve my post yes!

Would an admin approve my post if they felt it wasn't relevant or offered value? No

Will my query be relevant to the majority of people who are using a DTV to stay for a long period of time? Probably!

This question is no different to the hundreds of people who ask about opening a bank account Thailand's. Do you tell all of them to ask somewhere else.

Now why don't you go and familiarise your self with rule no 1

I moved my phone number to Lebara 6 years ago and I only make a 5 GBP top up once every 3 months and I'm able to keep my number this way. Never had any issue in years, as long as I remember to top up at least once every 90 days

Change to GiffGaff payg

Can port the number easily and just leave a little credit on there with all roaming switched off.

Leave answer phone message asking to contact via Whats App only. 😉

that's not really going to work if my bank needs to call me

Anonymous participant why would your bank need to call you? I’ve never had either my UK or Norwegian bank need to. They will email or send notification through the bank apps. And then you can call them on Skype for next to nothing.

oh I don't know maybe if I use my card and it gets locked, or if I lose any of my cards and need to speak to them.

The bank was one example of a company that may decide to call my registered U.K. number.

Just because your bank has never called you that doesn't mean someone else won't have or hasn't had a different experience.

Travel insurance and being able to call the emergency number or them call me ( been down that road before )
Kevin ********
Anonymous participant yeah been through all of that, I keep Skype credit for calling them, they will never need to call you. And if a bank calls you should NEVER talk with them anyway, you should always call them back on a number you know to be the correct one.

It’s not rocket science.

I’ve had a UK number for 15 years that is connected to FaceTime and Whats App, and I do actually have it active and it never gets called. Now I have a Norwegian number as well, and that is the same.

The ONLY time you may get a call, would be for security on abnormal transactions. And let’s be honest, if you are using a card from home in Thailand then you need your head tested. As the cost is crazy.

For ALL banking I now only use wise for cash and card. And they never call at all.

Who do you think you are talking to? You are rude and arrogant and that's putting it mildly.

I own my own company and conduct business regular and clients and companies need to contact me in the manner that is convenient for them. New flash most companies operate with a phone in an office.

As for the bank, first of all I use a credit card for all my spending, why because it gives me protection. Second I have no fees and the conversion is at the base rate. So what are you talking about me needing my head tested

You make a lot of assumptions about someone’s needs and circumstances when you know absolutely nothing about them. Here’s a reality check: not everyone lives the same life or has the same priorities as you. Just because you don’t do X, Y, or Z doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t have valid reasons for doing so

are you able to make and receive calls?
Kaitlyn *********
Anonymous participant from anywhere in the world, they port your number to their company. You can also add other people to the numbers so they can answer the calls and texts as well so my manager for my businesses is also added so she can get the calls and texts.

thanks, I'll check them out too.

Do you happen to know if someone calls within the country the ported number is based gets a normal dial tone when calling or if they get a different tone which lets them know you are out of the country?
Kaitlyn *********
Anonymous participant it’s the same tone

Anonymous participant yes I am

I Ported my number to an app called DEVYCE. cost around £15 a month and really easy to setup. Convenient for me as I can keep my UK number on the app and my Thai number with sim in the phone.

I use

which uses DEVYCE but cheaper (£9/month). I don't know what dial tone callers get. SMS, voicemail etc works perfectly. I was able to port my number as well.

how have you found this so far? I did come across this company on Reddit. Are calls done via an app? Is it reliable and do people get a U.K. call tone etc? Any issues with sending receiving SMS
Thomas *******
Anonymous participant Yes, all calls are made within the app, which has a similar layout to an iPhone call interface, complete with buttons like mute, hold, etc. I make multiple calls to the UK daily, and the service has been incredibly reliable. Over the 3-4 months I’ve been using it daily, I’ve only encountered one issue, which was resolved the same day. The app offers a personal approach I haven’t seen with other providers. Upon purchasing, you receive a message from one of the owners with their personal contact information, ensuring any problems are addressed quickly. The service operates on UK call tone, allows you to leave voicemails like a standard provider, and is so seamless that most people I speak to don’t even realize I’m not in the UK unless I tell them.

I needed to keep my UK number when I moved here, mainly for mobile banking as my bank doesn’t accept foreign numbers, I switched to Lebara and pay something like £4 a month. Just remember to regularly send a text message to keep it active. I just text my Thai number once a month!

I do similar with Lebara, very good service.

I downgraded my o2 plan to sim only £12 a month before moving to Bkk. Converted it to eSim too so i can change from my Thai to UK mobile number (and vice versa) any time.
