Hi

I’m at the very start of my research and always prefer starting with people who have had first hand experience such as on groups like this..

So I’ve been on a dependant non immigration O visa for years, but will need to switch to another type of visa by end of August. Husband is leaving his job and Thailand and I’m staying on with our senior dog. (No guardian visas for that I’m afraid 🤪). What is my best option for a visa for at least 6 months (likely much longer though). I need a multi entry visa that will allow getting apartment leasing contracts as well.

And lastly banking advice. Never had my own Thai bank account and will need to get one. Easy?

I’m based in Bangkok Sukhumvit area.

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat currently on a dependent non-immigrant O visa in Thailand is seeking advice on the best visa options to switch to by the end of August, as her husband leaves his job and the country. They are considering a retirement extension if the individual is over 50, which would require maintaining 800k baht in a personal Thai bank account for two months. Additionally, the expat is looking for insights on opening a bank account, finding the process straightforward based on personal experiences shared by others in the community.

I wrote this as an American staying in Chiang Mai but the same concepts apply for you…

Getting a bank account

Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Each office is an independent business. Each office makes their own criteria.

You certainly will pay a fee for transferring USD from USA to Thailand. The amount depends on the bank and the transfer service.

Banking is an essential service if you plan to spend time here. It’s not FREE.

I prepared ahead of time by getting a bank account set up 6 months ago.

I treated this as an important business transaction, not just a casual activity.

My Thai friend made an appointment for me at the Bangkok Bank branch across from Astra in CM. He also translated for me.

I am a middle aged physician and dressed as such. Yes I did do the whole business card ceremony.

I told the banker that I plan to retire soon and buy a condominium at Astra.

I was asked to purchase a life insurance policy for about $100. Presumably the banker gets a commission. Whatever, it’s the price of doing business at the bank.

They wanted to copy my passport and see my credit card from Wells Fargo. I think I showed them how much was in my account also to make the point that I’m a serious customer.

I also showed them $500 in perfect $100 bills that was to be the initial deposit.

Nothing else was required.

Act like a serious customer and you will be treated as such.

Present yourself properly and you should be fine.

If not, thank them for their time and visit another office.

Best wishes on your adventure to Thailand!

hi thanks but I don’t think you read my message carefully? I’ve been living here for years. So not an adventure. I popped into Krungsri and inquired about bank account. They just asked for passport and international drivers licence. Nothing else. We will see if that’s enough if I apply to them. I’m shopping around. It’s not a casual affair. I’ve been with hubby using his bank up until now. But now I want my own without relying on his work permit etc.

If you're over 50 then you should get an extension based on that, commonly called a retirement extension. There should be no need to get a new visa, simply change the reason for your extension. You will need to have 800k baht in your own bank account for 2 months before you apply though so timing is important but as your husband is finishing his stay until August you've got time

I’ve not heard of retirement extension before. But I gather that means I don’t have to leave the country and come back?

it's actually for people over the age of 50 and you can't work on it. But yes no need to leave the country.
