Good day, all. I'm in South Africa and plan to retire in Thailand next year. However, I want to spend a year there first to make sure it's what I want. Any tips on how I should start this process before committing full time?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A South African seeks advice on how to prepare for a potential retirement in Thailand, suggesting a trial year first. Comments advise exploring visa options, such as the OA retirement visa or a multi-entry tourist visa for extended stays. Additionally, participants recommend immersing oneself in Thai culture, renting accommodation, learning basic Thai, and familiarizing oneself with various locations in Thailand. The advice emphasizes flexibility in planning, financial readiness for living costs, and the importance of spending time in different regions to find the right fit.

Yes you should do like that first. Since you are SA national, you can get 60 days visa exemption with 30 days extension. So, you can stay 90 days. Do like this for 2 to 3 times and then visit various places in Thailand before taking final decision. Tastes and preferences of all of us are not same. May be the places I like you may not like. If you need any further information, feel free to ask

Feel free to contact me, I retired here 12 months ago on a Non O retirement Visa, chose Phuket after checking out Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Pattaya, my must haves were, Open ocean/surf, weather, excitement nearby for something different ( I don't drink) a rugby/ touch club, and TV access to rugby worldwide and other sports, Phuket did it all for me.๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™m also South African. I recently documented, on my Travel Blog, the process as it applies in the United Arab Emirates. You may find some useful tips there as the process should be similar around the world. Good Luck ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

To start, before you leave your passport country, get a multi-entry tourist visa. This can give you almost 9 full months being in Thailand, with just two border crossings and returns.

Not sure if you can get OA retirement visa there in SA that will give you a year plus without putting any money in the bank in Thailand. The only downside is you need buy insurance (not a bad thing)

Good idea you learn some basic Thai. Secondly, you are not going to learn much about Thailand nor the Thais by hanging with other foreigners. My advice spend at least a few months here and see how you handle it.

Rent everything including a GF .

If you Get a retirement visa, and then extensions of it, you can still change your mind and leave any time. The only commitment you have is financial whilst you are here such as maintaining adequate funds to.live on and for things like visa extensions and rental.leases etc.

I would give yourself at least three years ,,1 year could be the honeymoon period only
