What are my options after my retirement visa was denied in Thailand, and can I drive my car to Laos on a tourist visa?

I just had my retirement visa denied by the Khon Kaen office. I applied in Ubon and they said it was declined because I didn't include an original letter from the US embassy guaranteeing my pension income. The US embassy stopped issuing those letters 4-5 years ago. The FBU doesn't either and they're non-responsive.

I gave them a copy of my benefits letter and monthly SS payment statements.

I just sent a copy of my original statement of benefits that I received by post to the officer in Ubon who will call Khon Kaen and try to convince them.

The problem is I currently have a tourist visa because I left the country for an emergency and thought I had a multiple entry stamp but I didn't.

If this doesn't work, I have to drive to Savanakhet, apply for a 90 day retirement visa and then renew it in Ubon in October.

Is it possible to drive your own car to Lao on a tourist visa? They told a friend of mine "No". I have a car passport and blue book and I've driven to Lao dozens of times but usually on a Non-O visa.
Summary so far
The post discusses the denial of a retirement visa application in Khon Kaen due to a missing letter from the US embassy verifying pension income, which is no longer provided. The writer currently holds a tourist visa after an emergency trip outside Thailand and seeks advice on both appealing the denial and the possibility of driving to Laos for a visa. Community comments suggest alternatives for the visa issue, emphasizing requirements for financial proof and the option of utilizing agents for smoother processes. There’s also clarification on driving vehicles to Laos on a tourist visa.

Since your primary goal is to head to Savannakhet to secure your 90-day Non-O retirement visa and reset your status by October, you should adjust your transit plans:

Leave the Car in Thailand: Drive your car to Mukdahan (the Thai side of the Friendship Bridge II crossing to Savannakhet). There are several secure, covered, long-term parking lots near the border checkpoint where you can safely leave your vehicle for a few days for a small daily fee.

Cross by Foot/Bus: Pass through Thai immigration on foot, take the international shuttle bus across the bridge, and obtain your Lao visa/entry stamp.

Apply in Savannakhet: Complete your paperwork and apply for your 90-day Non-O visa at the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Savannakhet.

Return and Drive Freely: Once you cross back into Thailand with your newly minted Non-O visa stamped in your passport, your legal status to temporarily export your vehicle will be fully restored for any future trips.

Showing them a statement of Income from a Govt Dept in another Country is not the same as seeing the 65k Bt deposited into your Thai Account religiously every month from Overseas....

If you did that... and brought in the Authorised Thai Bank Starement with your Application then you wouldn't have a problem.

I'm on a Marriage Visa and it's what I do... without any problems...

They only want to see the Hard Cash entering the Country through your Thai Bank Acc. They couldn't care less how you got it.. as long as it's a foreign deposit each and every month covering the min they require...

Guy Windsor I’ve had multiple entry stamps for 12 years and I thought I got one when I got my visa but I didn’t. I paid for the visa but they only accepted cash and I didn’t have 3800 more on me in cash so I was planning on just getting one the next time I was going to leave the country, and I had no immediate plans to go anywhere.

A friend of mine died and I had to drive his wife and daughter to Lao and left within an hour of finding out and due to the circumstances, I didn’t think to look in my passport to see if I had a multiple entry stamp since I’ve had one for the last 12 years but yes, I agree. I should’ve had a multiple entry stamp but shit happens.

You can drive your own car as long as you have the international permit booklet

It’s easy to get you can get it in khon Kaen at the DLT office I think it cost a couple hundred baht

As long as the car is yours, registration is paid, valid passport. It should be good.

I’m not sure if you really need a Thai drivers license oddly enough

I have one, but when I went to go to get the permit to be allowed to drive into Laos, they never asked for it even once

Another sidenote when you first go over there for the first time with your car, you’re gonna need to make sure you have your blue book and make copies of the important pages of your blue book

Curt Thurston this old(!) .pdf is showing the requirements for the "change of visa type" from a touristic entry to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa. This text is NOT new, it has been posted since 3 decades. . . and regarding proof of income of more than 65,000 THB, you should understand the text as follows: "local" means the US embassy in Bangkok (they do not issue the income affidavit, they would certify the S/S letter, but most Immigration offices inside Thailand will not accept it) and "overseas embassies and consulates" would be the Thai embassy or consulate in the USA (no Thai embassy outside of Thailand will EVER certify your S/S income documents) . . . . . this means: Your ONE and ONLY option is 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account
Curt **********
Curt **********
OP
Greg Alexander And the other option is got to Savanakhet where they don't require an embassy letter or proof of 800K in the bank and they accept proof of foreign transfers over 65K a month and I'll get a 90 day retirement visa, just like I did a year ago . When the 90 day visa s about to expire, I go to my Ubon office and renew it. Then there's no embassy letter or 800K requirement because I'm just renewing it, not changing types.

I just submitted an online request for a visa in Lao and they only asked for three months of bank statements

When you change types of visa, you need to first go outside Thailand. They have different requirements at the embassy/consulate in Lao.

“If this doesn't work, I have to drive to Savanakhet, apply for a 90 day retirement visa and then renew it in Ubon in October.”

*** it makes absolutely no sense to apply for a 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa and enter Thailand on it, if you do not have the required 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account for the required 2 months when applying for the 1-year extension of the 90-days stay permit.

*** put the 800,000 THB into your Thai bank account NOW, exit Thailand and stay abroad for a while, then re-enter visa-exempt and immediately apply on Immigration for the “change of visa type” from the visa-exemption to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, using as proof of finances the 800,000 THB already sitting in your Thai bank account, and you must be able to prove that the money came from abroad. Plus, you will need a rental contract. After 60 days, with the bank letter that confirms the 2-months seasoning, you can apply for the 1-year extension of (the) temporary stay permit (you do not “extend the visa”, this is technically not possible, you can only get a stay permit extended)
Curt **********
Curt **********
OP
Gregor Huettner Ubon immigration told me the procedure. I'm guaranteed a 90 day visa from the Savanakhet consulate and I'm guaranteed to be able to renew it for a year when I go back to the Ubon office.

The embassy letter/800K in the bank is only a requirement when changing visa types, they have different requirements for just renewing the same type.
Gregor **********
Gregor **********
Curt Thurston "The embassy letter/800K in the bank is only a requirement when changing visa types, they have different requirements for just renewing the same type." . . . . . . . . for your FIRST application to the 1-year extension of stay, you need either the embassy income affidavit letter (not available from your embassy) or the 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account. (WATCH YOUR WORDING . . . .there is nothing such as "renewing the same type" . . . . You are NOT renewing any visa. You are applying for the 1-year extension of your STAY PERMIT. Your visa will already be useless, because it becomes invalid when you enter Thailand) The 800,000 THB deposit is a requirement unless you can show a 12-months bank statement of monthly consecutive transfers from abroad over a minimum of 65,000 THB into your bank account
Gregor **********
Gregor **********
Curt Thurston okay, it is like I repeatedly said: if you can show on the consulate Savannakhet 3 months of bank account statements over a minimum of 800,000 THB or equivalent in your bank account, they will issue the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa. If you show them the S/S letter, they will send you away
Gregor **********
Gregor **********
Curt Thurston 😳😶😳 Ubon Immigration is WRONG - the Savannakhet Consulate will NOT accept your S/S documents. They will only accept a bank account (home or Thai) with a minimum of 800,000 THB in it. If you run into bad luck, they might even require a 3-months account statement . . . .the problem with wrong recommendations of a Thai Immigration concerning matters in a Thai embassy or consulate is always the same . . . . . they are under two different ministries, and they do not know the rules of the other guy, they only know their own rules

On the Savannakhet Consulate, for the application to the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, he would need a proof of 800,000 THB or equivalent in his home bank account or in a Thai bank account.

They will NOT accept his S/S letter.

THIS is the problem he will face, and THAT'S why I am telling him to put the 800K into his Thai bank account NOW before he exits Thailand.

As ONLY THIS will enable him to

EITHER

apply for the Non-O Visa in Savannakhet, AND ONLY if he is lucky they will accept a simple account statement and NOT 3 months of statements

OR

enter visa-exempt and apply for the Non-O visa on Immigration inside Thailand, as for this the 800K only need to already sit in the account

Usually, it is sufficient to show that the 800,000 baht is in your Thai bank account when applying for an in-country Non O visa. However, Jomtien and Krabi are known to require the funds to have been seasoned for two months even for the initial Non O application. For a one-year extension, the seasoning requirement is standard.

Jitae929 when you enter on a NOn-Imm-O Retirement Visa, you get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit. You have 1-2 weeks to get your ducks in a row, get your Thai bank account opened and transfer the required 800,000 THB minimum into it, to comply with the 2 months seasoning of the deposit. It is ABOLUTELY POSSIBLE to get everything accomplished during the first 2 weeks after entry

You can get all the paperwork you want, but it won't matter. Using income is not an option for you to convert from tourist to non-O visa. Immigration only accepts proof of 800,000 baht in your Thai bank account for 2 full months, or embassy certified income. That's it. There's no workaround, no special document, nothing. It's one or the other. If you don't have the 800,000 in the bank, you're not likely to get the extension even if you get the visa from the embassy either.

In the future I would recommend purchasing a re-entry permit the same day you go for your extension, even if you have no plans to go anywhere. Better safe than sorry.

The Ubon immigration office told me if KK doesn't approve this retirement application that Savanakhet would, and not having a letter from the embassy is no problem renewing an existing retirement visa.

savanakhet will issue the 90 day Non-O if you can show 3 months of 65k baht income or 800k in a bank account anywhere. You might however experience a problem obtaining a 12 month extension of stay based on income as most offices won't count transfers made while on a tourist entry

he has not yet accumulated 12 months of consecutive monthly transfers from abroad into his Thai bank account (IF he has a Thai bank account which I highly doubt!) month for month not missing a single month, of a minimum of 65,000 THB.

I'm not sure he can for the initial 90 day Non-O visa, only for an extension of stay and he'll struggle to do so for his 1st extension. The only people I've seen get away with it are those changing from a Non-OA to a Non-O, but any monthly transfers made on a visa exempt entry probably won't count

If you already have a long history in Thailand and can document well over a year of continuous monthly transfers of at least 65,000 baht, some immigration offices, or individual immigration officers, have been known to accept that as sufficient evidence of income.

There is no formal rule allowing this. It is entirely at the discretion of the immigration office and the officer handling your application. The formal requirement remains 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account until your second extension.

he didn't say he'd been transferring the correct amount every month for a year whilst maintaining the 800k tbt in the bank. He said he was applying using usa paperwork showing his pension.
