TLDR : Answer Summary
The question involves the logistics of bringing a deceased person's ashes back to Thailand and whether to classify the travel as tourist or funeral-related. Community responses emphasize the importance of having all necessary documentation, such as the death certificate and import paperwork. While the majority suggest marking it as tourist, there are recommendations to check with the Thai Embassy for accurate information and legal requirements.

I brought my sons ashes back to Thailand and the funeral home did the paperwork for me. Also make sure the marker, a small metal coin like thing is in the urn. That has a number on it that will match the number on the documents. Hand carry the urn and notify them when you check in and at security. Coming into Thailand they didn’t check anything.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’d love to bring my fathers remains from Thailand back to Australia where he wanted to rest but I fear his Thai girlfriend probably threw out.

Thai Customs website

Bringing corpses/human ash into Thailand

Bringing corpses or human ash into Thailand does not require submitting an Import Declaration Form or Special Declaration Form. The Customs procedure involved is listed below:

Importers present the following documents to Customs officers:

The passport of a deceased person

Air Waybill, original or photocopy

The death certificate issued by the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the country in which the person passed away

Other related documents such as a letter confirming death issued by a hospital and a death certificate issued by a local authority in which the person passed away

Customs officers release the corpses and human ash (and keep record of the release) with the importer signing in the pick-up document.
