TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the best options for transferring money from the UK to Thailand for property purchases. Several users recommend using SWIFT transfers for large amounts, as they provide better rates and lower fees compared to Wise, especially for amounts over £25,000. It’s emphasized that Wise may not be the most economical choice due to its fee structure, despite being suitable for smaller amounts. Users also mention the importance of ensuring the transfer is coded correctly as a foreign remittance to satisfy Thai regulations.

Can't you use your visa to make the transaction? Will the conversion be much?

For regular day to day expenses we used our visa, they don't charge extra, just the current conversion. Am I paying more?

Arron Doherty that seems to be a condo and you would be buying it yourself in your name? I think then it should not matter where the money comes from.

the Land Office needs to see that the money came from abroad. You need to take care that the transfer is coded in your bankbook as a foreign remittance. For amounts larger than 25,000 GBP, it is advised to do a direct SWIFT transfer from your home country bank to your Thai bank account, because from a certain amount on, the low transfer fee of your home bank will pulverize the advantage of the Wise or Revolut exchange rate, because their fees are constantly rising, the higher the amount is

I use Remitly. More responsive and less costly.

On my Krungsri bank account it shows that it is a WISE deposit.

No, if you are doing a very large amount, use SWIFT and transfer as GBP so it converted by the incoming back. SWIFT is about £20 and the incoming bank will charge you up to Bt500 but you will get market rates and it will cost less than Wise, who work on a commission basis whereas SWIFT is fixed price.

Also for SWIFT, there is no ambiguity of it being a foreign receipt.

Andy Johnston that is certainly not my experience. SCB rates are lower than Wise rates even after their fee.

However, you are correct about it not showing as an international transfer.

not a good one. But it is the only option to show that your money comes from abroad

Mat Matulka no, it is not the only option, there are other options. Wise has by now set up a new selection menue where you are asked if you need the transaction coded as a foreign remittanc. And that button works

Arron Doherty in case you can code the transfer as having come from abroad, it is OK to use Wise. But as I already said, from a certain amount on, the direct SWIFT transfer has better conditions. You really need to compare before

Arron Doherty I once used WISE to transfer 50.000 Euros, but in the hindsight I should have used a direct SWIFT transfer from my home bank
