TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, the 1949 International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid for riding motorbikes in Thailand, provided it includes the correct endorsements and is accompanied by your home country driving license. However, keep in mind that while the IDP may be accepted for 90 days, obtaining a Thai driving license is mandatory for longer stays. It's important to ensure that your IDP is legitimate and properly issued, as there are notable differences between policies and local regulations.

Can I get a Thai driving license on a Tourist Visa? The answer is yes. Regardless of what you read in forums, you can, and it is allowed. I did it when I was a tourist, and I asked in person at the Department of Land Transport.

actually If you stay more than 30 days then you can apply for local license against this international license. What you need is address Prof from immigration, passport copy 2 photo, this license copy, application form (collect it from there) and maybe 210 or 310 bath fee. Take the que before 8:00 am at Phuket Town road and transport authority.

Officially yes, 90 days, after arriving. They not check that, only the validity of the permet itself. For insurance is another matter.

I got a result last November when went to get new IDP from the post office. Person put the date and month to start from but didn’t put the year so I’m waiting to be asked for it - though in Thailand I have my Thai licence so will only be another country for holiday - and if anyone ask what (which I doubt) year just say that they must have forgot to write it down and happy to write it now. Might have for quite a few years before need to use it 🙂

To drive or lease a car in Thailand as a tourist or visitor it is necessary to have either a Thai driving licence or a valid foreign driving licence with a photograph. The foreign licence must either be in English, or be accompanied by an official translation into English or Thai. The licence needs to have been issued by a country that has a treaty with the Thai government allowing the mutual acceptance of driving licences. Most countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA have this agreement with Thailand under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Those in doubt should contact their embassy for advice: Click here

An International Driver's License/Permit (IDL/IDP) is also valid in Thailand, and available from a government department or authorized auto club at a small expense. A foreign driving licence valid under the 1949 or 1968 Conventions qualifies the licence holder to apply for the IDL/IDP, and its holders may find that it is more often recognised and accepted by police and civil service officials. Beware of the many IDP/IDL websites that are not legitimate.

If the driver is not a tourist or visitor but is a resident with a non-immigrant visa, then it is necessary to have a Thai driver's licence. However, those with a foreign licence as described above or an International Drivers Licence are excused from doing the practical driving test when applying for a Thai driving license.

Note: Although International Driving Licences are valid for up to one year after arrival in Thailand, after three months many comprehensive insurance policies are made void if still driving on a foreign licence.

Licence holders may only drive the category of vehicle for which their licence is valid.

I had one of those.. Never really seem to do any good. Police dont really check, too much. Depending where you are the police pull you over for one of two reasons; Bribe money or as a legit public service. Bribe money ranges from 10$US to 30$US. When its bribe money its usually routine, you'll know where and when they run those stops. When its a public service, its usually to remind you to wear a helmet.

If you want to avoid hassle with the police, wear a helmet.

It will make more sense once you are here.

If memory serves me correctly, Thailand is not party to the treaty reference in your document. I think they are not party to any international driving treaty. I think they maybe party to some agreement for ASEAN, but that's probably not likely applicable to you.

being legal helps when you get in an accident and need insurance to cover anything. I'm not sure if Thailand requires the IDP or if a license in English is all that is needed. In the US it depends on the state, for some its legal to drive without the IDP as long as your home countries license has the information in English. For other states an IDP is needed or you are driving illegally. Kind of stupid there is no consistency, but that's the way it is.

Or get a Thai license here 7gbp approx and can legally ride here and covered by UK insurance also 🤣 I failed my bike test in England last year (aced the theory aced mod 1) as the examiner was a c¥nt and said I didn't look over my shoulder enough on one turn (oh please) they randomly fail people who passed to hit the % for fails in each county and to make more money.

The examiner was up his arse big time (most examiners are and instructors) and wouldn't last 2 seconds on the roads here. Been riding 17 years all around South East Asia and the tool fails me for not looking over my shoulder. 🖕 the UK system and 🖕 that examiner!

Not sure how long you need to have a license in Thailand for to be able to get an international one I heard 2 years full licence also 3 years TBC anyway when that day comes I look forward to riding in the UK on a 7 pounds license.

yes, but that insurance that comes with the bike, and other vehicles here along with annual registration renewal, is hardly sufficient, especially if a foreigner is unfortunate enough to have a serious accident with a Thai national. Most do not add additional, understood, but one should know the risk involved. Again, provided insurance insufficient for any serious or major accident, especially if the foreigner is at fault (is there any other kind--- hahahaha).

You're good then. We've done 8 multi month winter trips to Thailand and clocked over 20,000 km on scooters. I always get one of these, CA$25 from CAA, our auto club. On average, three stops at checkpoints where they look for helmets and permits. (Typically a fine of Baht 600 for the absence of either, paid on the spot and then you just drive on.) Almost always, the mere sight of that grey cover elicits a smile a wave or "Where are you from/going?" Only once, did he actually open the folder to look at my passport pic inside the back page. What became clear over time is that they really don't want to read it. Thais everywhere have a commendable command of basic English but reading, not so much. Add in the fact that their Year is about 500 years different than ours and that the motorcycle endorsement stamp isn't that easily understood anyway and they're just not going to waste their time. I resisted just keeping the 1 year permit for 8 years, which would work, since insurers might be more attentive than the cops if we got in real trouble. You're going to LOVE Thai touring.

Good for 90 For longers stays, obtaining a Thai drivers license in mandatory. Getting a Thai drivers license based off a valid international permit is quite easy, though: Some documents and watching a video + eye sight test, and you are all set. One thing though: You sure this is a legit IDP? I am asking, as yours seems to be issued with a starting date in the future. Have never seen that before. Usually the starting date is the date it is issued.

Also must be shown with the driver's licence it was obtained with. Technically good for 90 days each trip in Thailand, but police never checked how long I had been in the country. Insurance might check. Also some insurance policies require a Thai licence. You can easily get a Thai licence if you want to stay longer.
