TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can rent a car in Phuket for a trip to Bangkok. Various rental companies are available, and some users have had good experiences driving between these locations, suggesting that the drive takes about 12-13 hours. It's beneficial to rent for a minimum of five days to avoid drop-off fees. Additionally, having an international driver's permit is recommended for smooth passage at interprovincial checkpoints. Alternatives mentioned include taking a comfortable bus from Phuket to Bangkok or flying to a nearby airport like U-Tapao and then taxiing to Bangkok.
You can rent through hertz at the Phuket airport. Minimum of 5 days rental, so you wont have to pay the fee to drop it off at a different location. I paid about $120~ for 5 days at Phuket airport on July 28th, dropped it off at Suvarnabhumi 5 days later. The drive was fine but I passed 5 checkpoints on the interprovincial borders along the way to Bangkok. Just make sure you got an international driver’s permit and they will let you pass easily. Good luck! 🍀
Before Covid l rented one for 2 weeks from the airport, drove it to Hua Hin then onto Udon Thani airport, one way, about $45 Aus a day no extra to drop it off in Udon
As far as I know, the only other things running are private van/car or you can rent a car yourself. No busses, other than Sandbox Express (which is now a minivan) are running.
Not sure which bus you all are talking about. There is the Sandbox Express bus which I believe is currently 1800 but it doesn't run overnight. It leaves Phuket very early in the morning and ends up at Suvarnabhumi at about 9 PM. It's only open to Sandboxers. I think you can make reservations (must be at least by noon the previous day for the trip) online. See article below.
