Is it necessary to have a hotel and flight booked before applying for a Thai visa?

Do you really have to have a hotel and flight booked before applying for a visa? It feels a little scary to do that and possibly not receive one.

Also, any Americans here that have applied for a visa and received one? Can I message you directly about the process?

Lastly, if I fly to Bangkok will I be allowed to fly to Chiang Mai after the mandatory quarantine?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
You generally do not need to have your hotel and flight fully booked to apply for a Thai visa, though some consulates in the US may require an itinerary. However, you will need to show proof of accommodation and flight at a later stage for the Certificate of Entry (COE). After the mandatory quarantine in Bangkok, you can travel freely within Thailand, including to Chiang Mai.

I got the my TR visa and COE in hand just this last week. The Chicago consulate wanted everything, but after approving the visa asked for me to upload the flight and ASQ info which I had already done. So I'm not positive if was actually needed. But as others have said most hotels will give a full refund if you do not get your COE, which you won't get if you don't get the Visa. Also book an airline with a good cancelation policy or free rescheduling, Qatar is supposed to be one of the best for that and happened to have the shortest and cheaper of not cheapest flight out of Chicago.

As far as after quarantine you are free to go wherever you want.

Find a hotel that asks for a deposit (5000 baht maybe) and will allow you to use that deposit against a future booking if the visa goes wrong.

Most airlines offer fully changeable tickets during the crisis.

No, you MUST quarantine in BKK if you first land there.

If you meet the qualifications for a Visa, the application is just a formality. You should have no concerns booking ahead of time, and there are many options with good cancellation or change policies if you're worried

Yes, in the US you have to have flight and ASQ booked.

Depends on the consulate you're using. There's 4 consulates in the USA(if my memory serves me right); what is their policy?

>Lastly, if I fly to Bangkok will I be allowed to fly to Chiang Mai after the mandatory quarantine

Yes, you can go to Chiang Mai directly after quarantine.

You have to at least have an itinerary you do not have to have the hotel and the airline booked until they approve your Visa you do have to have them to get your c o e because they will request that and the receipt of payment for both before issuing.

Depending on the embassy you are applying through the requirements are slightly different (seems strange but it’s true)

Generally you don’t need to have the hotel or flight booked to apply for a visa (tr). You need to have the flight number though (donuts a good idea to find the flight(s) you intend to take)

Yea after quarantine you are free to move around the country. There are no domestic travel restrictions Thailand
