Hi everyone, I'm planning to apply for the retirement visa. I already have a Thai bank account. Just wondering - is it difficult to do the application myself without an agent? I speak English but not Thai. Appreciate any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
Applying for a retirement visa in Thailand yourself is manageable, especially if you are patient. You do not need to speak Thai fluently, as most immigration offices in Thailand can communicate in English. To obtain a 90-day Non-O visa, you must demonstrate that you have 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank account and have a minimum of two weeks remaining on your current visa. It's advisable to familiarize yourself with the specific requirements by visiting the immigration office for guidance and prepare necessary documents such as passport photos, a bank letter, and your bank book. Many expats have successfully navigated the process without using agents.

Do it yourself. Take two passport photos a letter from your bank and your bank book caught up to that day. I always did a small transaction that day then caught it up go to immigration and the forms are not that difficult. I go to Sakon Nakhon and they are very helpful.
Better to just speak English with the immigration unless one is really fluent in Thai .
I always used to laugh in pattaya when some guy speaks some bar girl Tinglish with immigration. I understand that English isn’t everyone’s native language but no need to talk like you’re at a beer bar while at immigration.
I just speak English, wear a three piece suit and carry a leather briefcase.
No problem doing it yourself, you don't need an agent, you need a good bit of patience, but you certainly don't need to speak a word of thai (few foreigners who get visas actually do 😛 )
You will first be applying for a 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 (retirement). To do that you need to have 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only and at least in bangkok you have to prove the funds were transferred in from abroad
You need a minimum of 2 weeks left on your current 60 day free entry stamp or 60 day tourist visa to apply for the 90 day Non-O visa at the immigration office because the application goes under review for 2 weeks before you go back to get the Non-O visa and new 90 day stamp inked in
You should go to your immigration office and get the hand out listing the requirements, (TM30, lease, bank letter, copies, etc) so you can get them together and apply
