When you have to deposit your 800k baht into your account, do they prefere 800k thai baht from wise or do they prefere English pounds transfer from my UK bank and they do the conversion
Answer summary
When depositing the required 800,000 baht for a retirement visa in Thailand, it seems that the source of the funds is less critical than ensuring that the amount is indeed present in a Thai bank account. Users have discussed the use of services like Wise for transferring funds, noting that while Wise may offer better exchange rates, the specific requirements can depend on individual banking setups. It appears that as long as the funds are in the account for at least two months prior to applying for the visa, the source of the money is not an issue.

Sure they prefer pounds, they get more from the exchange rate.
It all depends on who you bank with, in UK & Thailand. I use HSBC and the HSBC transfer fee is £4 and I transfer UK pounds to my Kasikorn account to get the best exchange rate and there are no additional transfer fees. I've never used Wise but from what I've been told by friends who do use it they pay more for the transfer than me and get a worse exchange rate. You need to check YOUR bank's transfer fees and exchange rate as each sending bank will differ as will each receiving bank. As an example before moving over here, 14 years ago, I used Lloyds bank to do the same transfer and they charged me £18 transfer fee then there was an agent fee in UK (about £20 if I remember right) to do the transfer plus another agent fee in Thailand to receive the money and transfer it to Kasikorn and the exchange rate which was done by the Thai agent was very low. I'm sure that some of the people who are saying Wise is best are not lying as their banks could be charging very high fees but others may not even have checked, you need to find out what is best for you based on your banking setup.
Marcus Baker ... Correct. Almost no transfer fee. my recent move of ฿18,000 via Wise (after an internal wise exchange) from foreign currency, the fee was 60B 👍
But I read that it MUST be from a foreign account, & wise transfers this way is technically a LOCAL TRANSFER.
So can anyone verify if this transfer method is ACCEPTED for a retirement visa application & works?
Trevor Ratcliffe Like I said in my post, with HSBC I pay just £4 per transfer and get the local exchange rate with kasikorn. A bank/transfer company makes their money somehow normally either by a transfer fee or via higher than normal exchange rates so it's worth checking with your bank and transfer company before deciding which is the cheapest.
