Hi all,

I see a lot of you mention including a "letter from your employer confirming that you can work remotely" when applying for your visa.

The question is, is this mandatory, or other documents (such as the contract itself, confirmation of business registration in my country, invoices etc.) would be enough?

Is this required, or do you just include it to increase your chances?

Is there anyone who got DTV without this letter?

My bosses are perfectly aware of me working remotely and I did it from Thailand before, there were never any issues. However, as it's a pretty stiff company environment, I expect they never produced such documents and will be hesitant to sign anything.

Thanks in advance.
Answer summary
The necessity of a letter from your employer confirming that you can work remotely when applying for a Thai visa (specifically for the DTV visa) varies. While many embassies require this letter, some applicants have successfully obtained their visas without it by providing alternative documentation like contracts, business registration details, and pay slips. Although a letter can strengthen your application, especially if it clarifies your remote work status and compliance with Thai regulations, in some cases, briefs confirmations or other evidence of remote work may suffice. Experiences vary by applicant and embassy, so checking specific embassy requirements is advised.

I applied thru soft power, yet they even asked me for my company's letter to show they are OK with me being in Thailand. So what do you think about those who apply thru remote work?

I am self employed so I am curious if my cover letter covers that portion. I also included business registration, most recent pay stub (I’m an S Corp and pay myself as a W2 in addition to distributions), business license, work contracts, etc.

Sawadee, I understand your worry with strict company. Many consulates list employer letter as required for workcation DTV, but some people get approved without it if other papers are strong. Contract plus business registration plus invoices plus pay slips can be enough if contract says remote or outside country work allowed.

If company is stiff, try ask for short simple letter, just name, position, remote work allowed, no salary detail needed. Or ask HR for email confirmation and print it. Officers want proof that work is not in Thailand and company knows you are abroad.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Everything is Embassy dependant, so you can’t get qualified answers without telling which Embassy

Use search including Embassy name, you are asking questions that has been answered numerous times.

I was asked for a work contract clearly stating that they were "OK for me to work from Thailand and that I will not provide any service to any Thai clients". I was asked for this in Australia. I had no issues getting it, I guess I was lucky they did not wanted to retain me & were willing to do what was required to make that happen.

It’s an extra required document. After I uploaded all the required documents (including my employment contract), they messaged me asking for this letter from my employer.

My company orally gave me permission to work remotely abroad, but they refused to issue a formal written document. So, I used my experience working remotely from China earlier this year—including my Chinese entry and exit records as well as my paystubs during that period—to prove that the company actually permits remote work overseas. And it worked, they accepted it! I applied at the embassy in Berlin.

Not strictly mandatory everywhere, but it's the document that removes the most doubt. What the embassy wants to see is proof that you (1) have a stable remote income and (2) are allowed to do it from Thailand.

If you're employed: contract + a short letter from the employer stating you can work remotely from abroad/Thailand is the safest combo. Some embassies (London, some US consulates) have asked for it explicitly in follow-up requests.

If you're self-employed: business registration + recent invoices/contracts with clients + bank statements showing the income usually work instead of a letter.

Either way, add the 500k THB bank statement and make sure names/dates match across all docs mismatches cause more delays than missing letters.

In London they specifically asked for this. As well as your employment contract that shows remote worker status

They want a document saying that you are allowed to work remotely and specifically in Thailand with the condition that you won't work with any Thai entities or clients.

Not sending it, can lead to a request for it and delay your approval.

Some consular offices are sticklers for having it explicitly written out that you may work remotely from Thailand for strictly non-Thai clients/entities.

UnforgettableRambutan8343 In every standard employment contract that have been through my eyes, the specified work hours and days usually state a clear requirements such as "remote/hybrid/work anywhere/monthly presence at office", etc. besides explanation of what hours of days the worker is required at the office during agreed full-time periods. Not a bad idea to get a re-written paper if the existing contract statement is unclear.
