How can I successfully extend my Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand?

Extended my DTV (workcation) today in Bangkok!

The process is very easy and straightforward. I spent 3 hours at the immigration office + 1900 bahts (extensions fees) + approximately 400 bahts for printing/coping.

The documents needed:

- 01 month bank statement (from the bank app)

- Work contract (translated in English with Google Translate) with a part which CLEARLY says that you are allowed to work online and aren't tied to a specific location

- TM30

- Previous 90-day report

- Lease agreement

- Thailand Digital Arrival Card

- Copy of the passport's biopage + all stamped pages

- a 4x4 picture

That's all. You give your documents. They give you a number and then you wait for your turn.

The bureau was full but 3 hours later, I was out with my stamped passport and 6 more months!

Don't let the fear mongers convince you that immigration "hates" DTV, doesn't want to process it or doesn't know how to handle it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of extending a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand is relatively straightforward, taking approximately 3 hours at the immigration office and costing about 2300 baht total. Required documents include a one-month bank statement, a work contract allowing online work, TM30, a previous 90-day report, a lease agreement, a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, copies of relevant passport pages, and a recent photo. The positive experience shared by the user indicates that Bangkok immigration is generally efficient and willing to extend DTVs, despite some users reporting difficulties in other regions.

Maybe the lack of 'interaction' with your Immigration Officer caused you to come away without your stamp? Otherwise, you would have kindly posted it for reference purposes to assist others as I previously requested.

So they check again that you've 500.000 baht in your bank account, right?

Whenever I get a helpful Immigration Officer I always give a tip and ask for their mobile number/LINE ID. Did you note their name or, at least, their rank? Both are plainly stated in English. I ask out of genuine concern for others in case someone else applying for their DTV extension is given the ‘run around’.

I didn't. Also, I didn't have that much interactions with them. It's very straightforward. You give them the documents, they give you a number. When it's your turn, you go the window. They will ask you to sit down while they review your papers, then they will ask you to show your face on a camera, then you wait again, and finally, they call you and give you your (stamped) passport. That's really it!

FWIW; Chaengwattana probably has extended the most DTV's of any immigration office.

They have the process down, they have a hand out you can pick up from Section J in the main immigration office at the Government Complex (Building B).

Early on once the DTV was rolled out they started working on the requirements for the DTV extensions and they're clearly posted on the immigration website

This is the clause #39 on the Bangkok Immigration website listing the requirements for a DTV extension

Thanks for sharing your experience ! Surely useful for some DTV holders who wish to try the extension route, and why not. It’s an option advertised by Thai immigration

Thank you.

always great to read that it is possbile and with no hassle.

Just show what is asked and fro 1.900 thb you can stay another 180 days in Thailand.

Shame that some still claim that it is impossible but you always will keep those who can not meet the requirements and put the blame on others.

Take care, do your 90 days reports and save travels next time as it is only 1 time an extension at 1 entry.

For add application or renewal does work contract needs to say location can be abroad/international/anywhere? Is it not enough if it says Remote, Home country? due to tax implications most don't allow international remote unless self employed contractor. I got remote contract but for home country, been living abroad and traveling though for year+ and its fine just don't need to let them know. But wonder if I need to edit my contract if will have any issues with the way it's worded right now, remote in home country only?

ElegantNarwhal3320 You already have your answer 😅

Your work contract says that you are only allowed to work remotely in your own country.

You are actively hiding your location from your employer, because you know working from abroad is a breach of your work agreement.

Thai law's immigration stated that you should be allowed to work remotely from anywhere.

I do think it will be problematic.

Honestly I don't think I have my answer, my impression and what some posters give is that Thai law require you to work for any company/client outside Thailand, remotely, that's all. They don't care about your contract. But your / some posts make it sound like they do.

So I wonder what the actual law is, cus ofc immigration might enforce their own views on it and it will differ from branch to branch. If so it would be easier to just amend contract to keep them happy. Rather avoid that for obvious reasons though if unlikely to be a problem.

But from a quick google I get it says "The Thailand Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) requires that you work remotely for an entity outside of Thailand, but it does not strictly require you to be a fully nomadic "work from anywhere" employee. You must be employed by or freelancing for foreign companies/clients, not Thai companies."

ElegantNarwhal3320 When it comes to immigration, I only use the official website of thai immigration. Here's the link of the page on which they describe the requirements to extend visas:

For DTV, it's number #39. Document required, n°4 : "Employment verification documents such as a contract for work abroad that is still in effect on the application date or employment history or previous work.". It's clearly stated that your contract should allowed you to work abroad, i.e from a foreign country. Is it your case?

Life can be so difficult, but so easy if you are honest and true as you said on application.

Most of us have actually been met by immigration officer who were unwilling to extend a DTV. It's not fear mongering, it's just sharing our experience, just like you are now.

It's great that you managed to extend yours. Bangkok immigration usually tends to be more by-the-book than other places, so it makes sense that they accept DTV extensions.

I personally prefer taking a weekend trip somewhere to extend my visa, but I understand that everyone doesn't have that freedom.

Anonymous participant 515 freedom comes with the DTV. Freedom to choose how to extend, and not forced to take weekend trips outside the country if they dont want to. Thats freedom

It is very difficult to proof training in a gym when you do not even know where it is located.

Yep, Immigration is at fault, how dare they ask and check documents.

There are for sure not willing to let you stay in the country to abuse the system, it is their job.

Participant anonyme 515 First, I have the "freedom" to do a weekend trip to extend my visa.

And yes, it's fear mongering. Not only fear but truth to be said:

- some people "stock" the 500K baht to apply and then use it. So when it's time to extend their visa, they don't have it anymore ;

- not all DTV applicants are genuine. Example: applying through Muay Thai and then, not taking classes.

Need another proof? Next time, people tell you immigration is asking for too much documents, ask them PRECISELY which documents and watch them crumbled 🙃

Anonymous participant I don't get why you got offended by me sharing my experience. But that's not my issue to deal with.

My immigration office, in Chonburi, said "we don't extend DTV's. Do a visa run instead". They didn't try to trap me or scam me. They just said "no".

You being able to extend yours is great news.

Anonymous participant 515 No, from my asking questions for months, most responses re from the fear mongers who have not done it themselves but who repeat other claptrap from the internet about some unknown person being refused for some unknown reason whilst they themselves have no direct experience.

To my knowledge, this is the first person I have seen who has actually applied.

Great to read that. It has previously been quite painful, and last year Chiang Mai Immigration was telling people they wouldn't do them at all. Then at the start of the year Immigration information was that people needed a Thai bank account for the statement, which gave us all hope that maybe Thai banks were ready to take DTVers 😅

Anonymous participant So you are saying that not only did the Bt500k need to be shown
***
/8 months previously to get the DTV but they specifically wanted you not to have spent any of it when extending the stay ?

This would categorically oppose the situation at a border where none of the original requirements is checked.

It would also be a wrong interpretation as the Bt500k is only required for the original application.

It's clearly stated on the immigration website. You need the 500K bahts to apply and you also need to have 500k baht (at least) when you extend your DTV. Here's the official page of the thai immigration:
*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
I also add a screenshot of the page. You can clearly see that the documents that I submitted to extend my DTV are literally the ones stated on their website. Also, as a remote worker, you are supposed to work online and therefore, to have regular earnings. It's not like you have saved money solely to fund your life in Thailand. You are supposed to live in Thailand thanks to your monthly/periodical income.

I think you're confused
@Andy *********
and by more than a litte bit 😮

The requirements to bounce out/back to activate a new entry on the DTV has abso-tively, posi-lutely ZERO to do with getting an in country extension of stay from the immigration office where you live/stay. 🙁

EVERY immigration office that issues DTV extensions requires you to show proof of funds for 30 days before you apply for the extension

AND

they require you to show proof you're still doing what ever it is you originally got the DTV for.

The requirements are almost a carbon copy of what you showed to get the initial DTV issued to begin with <- this is why many MANY people opt to border bounce rather than go for the in country 180 day extension.
