Can you get re-entry permits at the border crossings or do you need to go to an immigration office first?

I am planning to do a day trip into Laos on the weekend and am not sure if I need to go to the immigration office today to get a re-entry permit first.  Also as it is only a day trip I'm assuming I don't need to do a new TM.30?
