Good Morning, or afternoon, I have gotten so mixed up this past two years. Over Visa. In December, I hope to have sold my home, and can move to Thailand. With that said. In Sept. or October, I will apply for a non-o vise here in USA? Can I do that without Thai bank account? And without health insurance. I have the 800,000 BHT. But will have to get bank account when I get to Thailand... Or would it be easier to hire a lawyer now and send him all the paperwork and let him, do it? I will use Siam law firm. I am going to be using them anyway. Please do not tell me how easy it is to do it myself.. I will not do it. Thank you..

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about applying for a Non-O visa in the USA while planning to move to Thailand. Key points discussed include the fact that a Thai bank account and health insurance are not required to apply for the Non-O visa, although having funds in a US account is necessary. It is suggested that opening a Thai bank account can be done after arriving in Thailand, ideally transferring the required 800,000 THB only once a bank account is established. While some participants advise against using a law firm for visa processing, others suggest that assistance might be useful for real estate purchases or other services.

To apply for a Non O visa in the USA you do not need a Thai bank account and you do not need health insurance. You just need to show a minimum balance of $

in your US bank account.

When you get to Thailand you can open a Thai bank account and transfer the

0 baht into it ready to get your first annual Extension towards the end of your 90 day initial stay.

You do not require Health insurance for the extension on this visa.

If you've never been here, come for 4 months on visa exception find a girlfriend and travel around to nearby countries. Now is the time to decide if you will be bored here

Apply at home for the 90 days Non-immigrant O Visa based on retirement. No need for a thai bank account,yet. When you arrive in Thailand, you have 30 days to open a bank account and transfer ฿800k from back home. That transfer has to show up as international in your account/bank book. These ฿800k must be in your account at least 60 days prior to the day you apply for the 1 year extension. No need for a law firm or agent if you meet the requirements.Its just a waste of money.

Have you checked their fees? They wanted 14,000 to open a bank account for me. Crazy money. I did it with help from a Thai person. How much have siam legal quoted to do paperwork for visa?

@Lynnette ******
"checked their fees?" who's fees? Siam Legal? Is 14,000 what they quoted you to open a bank account? If that's the case, was 14k just for helping with opening a bank account?
@Brandon ***********
just advised me that Siam Legal don't provide help with opening bank accounts unless also using them for help with a Visa or Extension. So far,
@Sharron ******
hasn't mentioned needing help with a Visa, but it seems that she might use Siam Legal to help purchase a Condo at some point. Going through them and also for her first Extension of Stay, they might help with the bank account. I wouldn't pay 14k for help opening a bank account. Most seem to say that using an Agent costs between 4k and 7.5k. When I get to that point, I'll ask my Thai ladyfriend to help me open an account with the bank she's with. That shouldn't be difficult if the initial Visa is obtained before arriving in Thailand.

I was in siam.legals office and 14k was what they quoted for opening the bank account. I wasn't doing the visa. She may have made a mistake, but she told my Thai friend in Thai and me in English.

@Lynnette ******
that would be typical of the way a Law Firm charges. Maybe inflated to discourage requests for a service that there's plenty of 'Agents' helping foreigners perform a task that's apparently fairly easy to do provided you have the right visa.
@Sharron ******
might be interested to know this, though Siam Legal might ( 🤔🤷🏼 ) give a reasonable discount if she did her first Extension of Stay and/or help her with purchasing a Condo.

Apply yourself...only get assistance if you run into major obstacles...

Get the Non Imm O in the US. It makes the process so much easier when you get to Thailand. No need for the money in a Thai bank account for this visa if you apply in the US and it will make opening a Thai bank account so much easier

hi Sharron, I'm planning on retiring to Thailand in the near future when I have reached Aged Pension age. I won't claim to know anywhere near as much as many in the group, but have been reading a lot of posts for the past year and a half to learn as much as I can.

Get your Non-O visa (not the OA or OX, right?) in your home country, as it will make opening a bank account in Thailand considerably easier. With the Non-O Visa, there's no health insurance requirement, unless the Thai Embassy/Consulate in your home country specifies that it is. If there's no mention in the Embassy/Consulate website, then if you prefer, you can get insurance when you arrive in Thailand. When you're ready to do that, ask in a separate post for opinions on what insurance companies others have used and you'll get plenty of responses. In fact, you could first do a search in the group for health insurance and you'll probably find plenty of opinions. As far as changes go, I don't believe there's been any mention of changes to the Non-O visa. The OA & OX Visas, the minimum amount of Insurance coverage, I believe has, or will shortly be reduced.

I realise that you want to get help with opening your bank account. Perhaps contact Siam Legal and ask how much they would charge you to help open an account for you (you will need to be with their representative at the bank anyway). Quite a few foreigners use Agents to help opening bank accounts and it seems the average that they charge is around 5000 Baht. Once you arrive in Thailand, you will want to get that done asap, because your initial Visa is for 90 days and the 800,000 Baht must be in a Thai bank account for two months minimum before you apply for the first 1 year "Extension of Stay". When exactly you apply for the "Extension of Stay", I'm not really sure, other than it's before your 90 day visa expires. You do that at the Immigration Office in the Province you will live in and each may have their own rule about when you need to apply. If you specify what city or Province you'll be living in, someone will give you more specific information. Hope that helps a little 🙂

Siam Legal no longer offers bank account services unless you're also using them for your visa or extension.

@Sharron ******
plans to use Siam Legal to help her purchase a Condo in Thailand, from one comment she made. She has stated that she doesn't want to open a bank account on her own, though she's acknowledged that some, or many find it easy to do themselves. If she uses Siam Legal for the Condo and maybe also for her first annual "Extension of Stay", then she should be able to get their help with opening a bank account. She might have to commit to do at least 2 out of 3 with them to get the bank account service, which would be the first thing that she needs to do.

Sharron, an agent may charge around $US200 (about 7200 Baht) to open a bank account, but not $2000 for that service alone. Just for that service alone, I've seen people say between 4000 and 7500 Baht this year, depending perhaps on location and Agent's varying charges.

Thank you. This is what I have a most of my notes. But from time to time, I get mixed comments that confuse me as to when to do what.. This helps. Thank you.

From what I gather the agents run between $200.00 and $2000.00 depending on the agent

Have you ever stayed more than a couple of weeks in Thailand ?

If not you have to start by doing a testrun ex. 60 day touristvisa + 30 day extension, to figure out where to stay, and if can you live on the budget you will have avaiable.

Everyday life may be very different from holiday life, so don’t burn your bridges yet.

If you are so keen on using a law firm why do you ask here? It makes no sense whatsoever.

because I am not sure as to when to hire one. I am not sure as when I will use the lawyer. I want them if I buy a condo, which I am sure I will after a while. Do I get visa here for 90 days non o, then get bank account and deposit my 800,000for 3 months when I get there? Do I get health insurance when I get there?
Dirk **************
@Sharron ******
you can deal with the bank account when you are here. No rush and this an overview of the visa options.

So I want to get non-o visa here? and deal with the rest there?I can get health insurance once I get there. I haven't stayed there at length for several years. It was between Thailand and Italy. Which I usually stay 4 to 8 weeks . I have been doing that for over 40 years. Thailand is similar temp. to where I live now.. So I know myself, and I will adjust just fine. I have been planning this for some time now. But the visa thing, it seems like I have heard so many different things. I know it is changing again soon. Thank you.

has
@Sharron ******
said that she is looking at an 'Non-O A' Visa? All I read is that she's looking at Non-O, which doesn't require health insurance, unless it is country specific.
Brandon ************
There's no reason to use a law firm as they cannot do anything without your passport and you being in Thailand.

You do not need a Thai bank account or health insurance to apply for the 90 day non-O visa. You use the evisa system and choose the non immigration visa, pensioner option.

She said she would apply un USA in which case different requirements apply. There may be no need of bank account and health insurance, depends on Thai embassy in the US (not immigration office in Thailand).
