Can children on a DTV visa attend school in Thailand, or should I apply for a student visa instead?

Hi guys. My husband and I are preparing to go to Bangkok and hold dtv visa we assumed we would also get this for our children but my understanding is now maybe not.

I receive this from the embassy: (A consent letter from your parent to acknowledge and understand that holders of DTV including principal DTV holder and all dependants are not permitted to undertake or participate in formal education programmes in Thailand under this visa category. )

So should I wait to get a the student visa?

My kids are 1, 3 and 8

It has been posted before some schools will not accept students on DTV. This is first time I have seen an Embassy stating it.

Yes its quite clear isn't it, since ive paid for it maybe ill pursue until ive finalised their schooling choices as im yet to decide

That's weird. I helped a friend and his 9 year old daughter to apply for his DTV in December last year and she is now going to a school in Hua Hin, they are Europeans.

Well it's a private school. Not that expensive, around 80-90k per year.

Not certain how accurate it is, but according to this site, the kids have to be accepted to a school before they can get an ED visa, and that seems to require in-person assements, etc.

So seems like you will need to get them in on a DTV dependent visa and then switch the school age kids over.

A. Nony Mous my daughter was on an education visa but the assessments were online, so we applied from outside of Thailand. Most schools don't even have assessments admission requirement.

If you are going to apply from inside Thailand then at least be on a tourist visa and not a tourist exemption. It is way more difficult to change from tourist exemption to education than from tourist visa to education. So yes maybe you can change from dtv to education more easily too.

I do know some schools who have kids on dtv visas but those schools are not officially licensed as school. Maybe for proper licensed schools an education visa is required (or a dependent visa of a proper work permit)

GentleHamster3563 That school that was closed on Koh Phangan recently was not licensed. No idea what visa the 89 kids were on but doubt it was Ed.
