Can a Non-ED Visa Be Extended as a Tourist Visa in Thailand?

Hello. My friend's Non-ED visa is going to expired in early July. Is it possible to extend as a kind of tourist visa for 30 days at the immigration or it is unable to do it? Or else my friend needs to go out of the country immediately after it expires.

Thank you :D

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Non-ED visa cannot be directly extended as a tourist visa; however, after it expires, your friend will automatically enter an amnesty period allowing them to stay until July 31. It's crucial to clarify the specifics of the visa with the immigration office to understand the options available.

I'm not sure what you mean by a Non-ED visa. There is an ED visa, which is good for 60 days, and an extension of stay based on education, which must be renewed each semester. The extension of stay based on education allows you to stay after your Non-ED expires. (I'm assuming you're a university student).

IF your have the Non-ED visa, when it expires, your friend will go on amnesty automatically, and can stay no later then July 31.

If your friend has an extension of stay based on education, then your friend will cancel the extension of stay at the immigration office, and will be put on amnesty automatically, and can stay no later than July 31.

What happens after July 31? Nobody knows.

We checked out and found this on the website. But he still needs to contact the Immigration anyway right for this case as what you say?

Your friend *DOES NOT* have a visa, but an extension of stay. Your friend needs to cancel the extension of stay based on being a student, and then he will go on amnesty. On amnesty, he can stay in Thailand no later than July 31. It is unknown what would happen after July 31.

if they want to stay in Thailand why not simply make another extension of stay?

He can, if he qualifies for the extension of stay *AND* the immigration office will let him convert the extension of stay. Different immigration offices have different requirements for the extensions of stay. *Some* common extension of stays include:

-Extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national. Requires being legally married to a Thai (with the rose border certificate)

- Extension of stay based on being over 50 years old (requires 800K THB in a Thai bank account and being over 50 years old)

- Extension of stay based on raising half-Thai child (requires proof of the half-Thai child)

These extension of stays let a person stay in Thailand for one year, and cost 1,900THB.

I meant renew the extension based on education, my wife used to do that every 3 months at the immigration here in Phuket. (may be the school is closed or something tho)

Sure, he can renew the extension of stay based on education. However, the OP is asking converting the extension of stay to some type of tourist extension.

Like this (I dont know if it's right to attach a photo), so he needs to cancel this before going on amnesty?

If he looks at the stamp, he has an extension of stay based on being a student. He needs to collect some documents from the school saying he is no longer a student, and submit those documents to the immigration office to cancel his extension of stay. Once he cancels the extension of stay, he will go on amnesty and can stay no later then July 31.

Oh he extended once already following the duration of the course since April. He has 3 months visa and is gonna be finished in July. He is a student at a language school.

If he got an extension of stay, then his visa is no longer valid. He will need to cancel the extension of stay before he can go on amnesty
