What should I expect when presenting an onward ticket to Thai immigration?

ORIGINAL POSTER
Just putting in my experience with immigration. Just some context I’ve been to Thailand now 3 times once for a week on visa exempt, once with a tourist visa and then now on a visa exempt. So when entering most recently the Immigration officer looked at my passport and asked for onward flight or return flight. I had no phone data when landing so I had a screenshot of my onward flight, she looked at my onward ticket from my phone then thought about it for like 2 min then told me wait over there to the side. I knew I was going to be held back. Then another officer said follow me to the “back” room from there there were several of us waiting. The lady said I need to talk to the main immigration officer as soon as he’s finished with another person. Long story short, I waited 30 min then another lady came to me and said why are you here I said on Holiday. She said let me see your onward ticket and I showed her. Then she communicated to another lady and then she asked me why were you brought back here I said I have no idea and she was like who was the officer that told you to come back here and I said I can’t even pronounce your names. She said ok you are good then another officer came over and stamped my passport and I left from there. While I don’t blame the original officer cuz my passport photo and me now are a lot different with no beard and long hair and the onward ticket being from a screenshot I kind of wish the original officer at least asked me questions instead of just holding me back. I think they don’t have time for that since it was jammed packed and would rather have the back officers ask the deeper questions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat shares their recent experience entering Thailand on a visa-exempt basis, highlighting a situation where they were questioned by immigration due to an alleged mismatch with their passport photo and lack of a printed onward ticket. Following a brief detention, the individual was cleared after showing their itinerary. Many comments from the community stress the importance of having an onward ticket and the unpredictability of immigration officers' decisions in Thailand.

It's common to get asked to show your onwards ticket unless you are a resident. Could have been avoided with a simple print out. Same for hotel reservations. Standard procedure for most countries.

They all have their specific job, that's normal.

She doing her job, left it to her boss to make decision.

The thing to always keep in mind is the extreme autonomy of the individual Thai immigration officer.

In the west we are taught to expect fairness and equal application of the law to all. In theory, any way.

No such theory exists here. Each immigration officer has wide latitude and tremendous freedom to do as he or she sees fit, with very little value placed on "consistency."

many don’t even know the laws , I was told at my local immigration office that in order to change from my elite visa to a non o prior to my application for a marriage visa I will need to exit Thailand and apply for non o from a different country. However , looking at the immigration website you can convert to a non o without leaving Thailand but only in the Bangkok immigration centre. Which is cheaper and faster than hanging round Saigon for 14 working days ( so just under three weeks ) and facing the drama at the airport.

They are enforcing the rules. You did not match your passport pic.

After a short delay, you were on your way.

Don't try it again without a proper visa. Good chance they will stop you

there’s no limit on how many times you can go exempt

@Ben *******
look at the Q&A!

‘Furthermore, foreigners who enter Thailand under this Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme may re-enter and stay in Thailand for a cumulative duration of stay of not exceeding 90 days within any 6-month period from the date of first entry.’

@Donald *********
settle down mate , can you link that because I can’t seem to see that anywhere on the website

@Ben *******
The Thai e-visa website if you’d bother to look. Who says otherwise?
Ben ********
@Donald *********
doesn’t saying anything on there about how many times you can use a visa exemption
Donald **********
@Ben *******
there’s a day limit of 90 days within 6 months of the initial entry.

unless you can cite a government law, you prove nothing. At this moment visa exemptions are still given to people who return shortly after their first 90 days in Thailand

the old pass the buck routine? You can cite a government law disproving what I posted to satisfy your ego then! I’m not wasting my time. Do you understand how the 90 days in 6 months works? Clearly not. It’s a rolling thing. I posted what I found in order to assist people and prevent them getting turned back at immigration. If you barstool barristers don’t accept what was posted, no skin off my nose.

They are micro managed by their superiors and can’t make a mistake or lose face so they just pass you up the chain.

My airline asked me to print my ticket. And I was asked to show it on check in.
