TLDR : Answer Summary
The current policy regarding Covid-19 visa extensions in Chiang Mai remains uncertain and is likely to change after January 29th. Many expats express their frustration with the inconsistency of service at the immigration office. Reports indicate that the standard procedure for applying for a 60-day Covid extension is to receive a 14-day under consideration stamp from the date of application, and for those continuing the same type of extension, the new extension usually adds to the previous expiration date. However, individual experiences vary greatly depending on the officer handling the application.

That seems to be the case. I changed from a medical extension to the current covid one. It's effective from the date I applied. But when I tried to apply for a second time covid extension two weeks ago, the CM office told me it will be effective from that day as well. So I have to do my extension near the end of Jan.

okay, people when you apply for a 60 day covid extension AS A RULE the 14 day under consideration stamp starts the date you apply for the extension (no matter when your stamp runs out the the date you apply is the date you APPLIED) and you should get a stamp that says come back in 14 days from that date.

Also AS A RULE, when people go back to "close the loop" on an under consideration stamp (and they're getting an extension again for the same reason; like on a covid extension applying for another covid extension) you will get the new 60 day extension ADDED to the expiration date of your previous extension.

AND

It seems the only people we are seeing who are getting the 60 day covid extensions being effective from the date they apply are people going from another type of extension TO a covid one. (Like those b/s medical extensions, or an ED, or B or volunteer, etc).

Hopefully I get a different officer next time, but the officer I had today said 45 days from the 4th when I return. We even went back and asked again to clarify that and what, if any other paperwork would be required. But as you rightfully pointed out I have no idea what officer I will get and what stamp they will give me.

@Wylie ******
definitely report back and let people know what you get okay?

be careful. You may end up getting 15 days, then 45 days from the day you apply. I just went with a current stamp to Feb 9th and got a 15 day under consideration stamp for Feb 4th. So instead of getting 60 days added onto my previous stamp it'll only end up being 40. You won't know until its stamped in your passport either. If the same happens to you then you may only end up with about 20 days beyond your Feb 28th stamp.

easy now
@Wy***
you have NO idea what stamp expiration you'll get when you go back.

Nice work getting an April stamp. Impressive

I'm trying to remain grateful but I'm having a hard time with this inconsistency. I went to CM Immigration today, my CoVid extension expires Jan. 29, I received the dreaded "under consideration" stamp and must return on Feb. 12th. Any ideas why it's so different, on the same freaking day??

@Pam ******
i just went today and got the 15 day under consideration stamp and have to go back on Feb 4th. My previous stamp was until Feb. 9th so I actually lost 5 days.

You should feel lucky that they at least gave the 15 days from your current stamp and not the day you applied like me. It is frustrating and seems as if there is no real person in charge. If there was there would at least be consistency.
Tod *********
@Wylie ******
you didn't lose any days (YET). When you get an under consideration stamp it starts the date you apply for the extension. You won't know until you go back on the 9th IF they date the extension from your current expiration OR the date you applied.

I'd wait until you go back before "feeling frustrated"

I hope that's the case, but they specifically said to come back on the 4th and I would be given another 45 days from that date. Perhaps I'll get a different officer who will do something different though. The frustrating part is the complete lack of consistency. I can at least understand inconsistency between offices, but not between two desks sitting right next to each other.
Tod *********
@Wylie ******
i agree the lack of consistency is vexing especially to people who are on these extensions. BUT let's wait and see what you really get when you go back

Were you already on a 60 day covid extension when you applied today?
Wylie *******
@Tod ********
no. I am on my original entry stamp on my tourist visa. Either way I think I will be good. It just amazes. I would think these extensions have been around long enough for whoever is in charge to realize and correct any inconsistencies between officers.

Good luck! ๐Ÿ™

I think it's "luck of the draw" :O

another poster just posted theirs and it's also an under consideration stamp :(

It's a Crap shoot, for sure. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

You got 3 months?
Frank *********
Oh I see, thank you!
Tod *********
@Frank ********
the 60 day extension was issued starting from the expiration date of the stamp in their passport NOT the date they applied. They didn't get 3 months, the stamp they were on when they applied for the 60 days expired on Feb 28th :)

No one knows what the policy will be when this current order runs out on the 29th of Jan. Just watch the news, wait for the update like all of us.
