ED Visa Cancellation Advice

I would like to ask about the cancellation process for my ED Plus visa which I extended 1 year after graduation according to Thai immigration policy. I graduated from Thai University and my current visa is valid until November 1, 2026. I plan to depart Thailand on August 10, 2026 via Suvarnabhumi Airport. My university informed me that they no longer provide cancellation letters since I have already graduated. Therefore, is it necessary to cancel my visa in advance at the immigration office and how many days advance to cancel the visa, or will it be automatically canceled upon departure? Are there any documents required for visa cancellation in my case? Thanks
Summary so far
The user is seeking clarification on the cancellation process for their ED Plus visa, which is valid until November 2026 after extending it post-graduation. They have learned that their university no longer provides cancellation letters and seek guidance on whether they need to officially cancel their visa at the immigration office prior to departure or if it will be automatically canceled upon leaving the country. The comments reveal a mix of personal experiences, with some users advising not to worry about cancellation and suggesting that the visa will automatically void itself upon departure, while others stress the importance of addressing the cancellation with immigration to avoid future complications.

[Chiang Mai] I just ran into this with my son who was on a Thai language visa last year, but then we didn't renew and he re-entered 2 months later on a Visa Exempt entry.

Last year, we left the country without officially canceling the Education visa. During the time we were away, the stay expired. Upon re-entry to the country, he received a 60-day Visa Exempt entry with no problems.

However, when attempting to extend another 30 days in country, the officer informed us it would not be possible until the Education visa was registered as canceled in the system--which required a letter from the language school dated with the day he left Thailand last year. Fortunately, we had extra time left on his VE entry or he would've overstayed while getting the paperwork for canceling his prior visa.

Once the ED visa was canceled, he could extend just fine. I'm guessing you can technically get by with not canceling if you never extend a future VE entry, but the school should definitely have to issue you a cancellation letter if you demand it. I believe the local immigration office would probably advise the same (and I recommend still contacting them with passport in hand).

Micah Gitlin The OP is talking about the ED Plus+ visa, It's a relatively new visa that allows a year of work after the course has finished. Hence the particular procedure to cancel isn't widely known.

Wannikea Wanblee Ah, okay, that's interesting. Thanks for clarifying.

Doesn’t leaving the country without a re entry cancels it automatically?

Also, is there a reason not to let it expire by itself?

Daryl Tang It cancels the permitted to stay stamp but not necessarily the extension which was issued with conditions. Nobody seems to know what the conditions were for the Non-ED Plus extra year extension if any.

it won't expire by itself. It will remain open in the immigration system which will likely become a problem if ever applying for an extension of a long term visa in the future. Won't be an issue for tourism entries

I dont know about ED+ Visa, but when i graduated from Thailand university, i had like +4 months of stay on my ED Visa. I specifically asked my university's liason department to leave it as is, i wanted to use the remaining leftover months to explore Thailand. Several of my International friends who had various extra time on their ED visas had also requested NOT to cancel them. Long story short, most of us were only able to use about 40+ days before leaving Thailand, NEVER having to report/cancel the visas at all. Years later we reunited, pretty much every now and then during alumni homecoming and we all arrived either by visa exemption or TR. Not a problem, not a question asked about "why didnt we personay cancel out our past year's ED visa".

So yes, i would NOT worry at all about cancelling your ED visa and just leave it expires. You will be safe as long as you are out of the country before the expiration date, then later re-enter under different visa scheme.

You can arrive just fine on a Visa Exempt entry without cancelling--the issue is if you try to extend at a local immigration office. I can't specifically speak to ED+, but Chiang Mai would not let my son extend his stay until his prior ED visa was cancelled (even though he left without re-entry permit, and came back under VE).

FamilyPacker sure, you won't have any issues coming back as a tourist. But if you want a long term visa or extension in the future, you could run into a lot of problems and a 20k fine.

FamilyPacker You will probably find that you were on an extension and, as you didn't cancel it if required, the next time you use Immigration services there is a good possibility they will notice this and you will be fined 20K (it's 500B/day up to a maximum of 20k). This would be the case on a normal Non-ED extension but whether it applied to the extra year extension who knows. I don't suppose you read the conditions before signing.

Just my opinion but the school supplied the paperwork for the 12 month extension, it would be logical that the school should also supply the paperwork to cancel the extension of stay. Try pushing your school to do so.

I'm not sure anyone will be able to answer this except for your immigration office.

The ED Plus is still kind of new, and not many people take advantage of the extra year.

I asked the visa expert who knows the most about visas, and he also doesn't know about if the bonus year needs to be cancelled, and if it does, how to do it.

So unless someone who has already been through this comes here to reply, I think you're going to be stuck going to your immigration office to ask.

Thanks, that's why I'm curious to know if others have gone through this process, as this new visa cancellation is quite unfamiliar.
