Reading some of the posts on this group the whole process seems complex and full of conflicting advice. Where is the best place to seek official advice, a list of processes in the order they are required and no sarcastic comments please?
Answer summary
Finding reliable advice for visa processes in Thailand can be challenging due to the conflicting opinions often shared in community forums. The Thai embassy website is considered a primary source of accurate information. However, local immigration offices may have their own interpretations of the rules, leading to discrepancies in advice received from different sources. It is advised to consult directly with immigration officers or the official website to ensure clarity and correctness. Additionally, engaging with knowledgeable individuals in expat communities can help distinguish reliable advice from misleading suggestions.

Immigration offices interpret the rules differently in each province and quite often the officers in the offices can also have their own interpretation...
And rules change, or some offices may have a crack down on enforcement of rules that weren't being enforced...
Hence, people have different experiences and some don't appreciate that
When I did my Non O Visa, 2 years ago, all of my information/guidance came from the Thai Immigration website, entire application process online. I learned about that particular visa by reading through the descriptions/details of different visa types….
The deal is to remember that often it isn't advice that conflicts but actual practice that differs. In Thailand individual offices act differently. That applies to Immigration but also, for example, tax offices too. Don't expect either official or any other supposedly universal answer to apply on a local basis. Most here haven't reached the taxation stage, but a very applicable example is trying to open a bank account and getting different answers from different branches of the same bank. This isn't the West where there is a near universal chance that answers from different branches or offices of an organisation will correspond to the organisation's stated rules. I went into my internet supplier's local office yesterday. I will go into one or two more to cross-check. You get used to this. In fact I have bitter experience on mobile service suppliers. Being advised by one office of the supplier, acting completely in line with the advice and having to go to another office to sort the mess.
Qui, mieux que l'Ambassade de Thailande dans votre pays, serait suceptible de vous répondre sans détour ni contour ! Je vous mettrais bien le liens vers celle de PARIS, c'est rédiger en Anglais, ça vous donnerait les bases
There will be conflicting answers for many posts. Some know what they are talking about. Some clearly don’t.
Separating the good from the bad is just usually about working out who’s who.
If an admin or moderator answers you then you’ve had good advice. Others are a coin flip. There are many knowledgeable people in this group and there are some not so.
Obviously you’ll get the answers that say “check out the official website” but that’s the reason this group exists.
The official websites are generally run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are the ones that sell visas to enter Thailand.
Actual policies on whether you can enter or for how long are dictated by the immigration department.
Sometime the left hand and right hand don’t always speak directly to each other.
Hogwash . There are massive differences between each and every application of the rules between every immigration office in every province. I spent two years trying to do it on my own. Total failure. Finally gave up and hired an experienced agent in Pattaya. Approved and issued a bank account and retirement visa within three weeks.
To start with, there are no clear advices on anything concerning Thai Visa and Thai Visa rules.
"Young" clarified this already.
This said, I add 2 advices:
- Don't ask Facebook for advices unless you want to get a lot of useless advices and bashings. Even Thaivisa, now Asean, is full of keyboard warriors who have nothing else to do in Thaiiland and give their useless advice about Thailand.
- The only place to get useful advices is the Thai Immigration website and the Thai Immigration departments. Although each officer is entitled to inpose his own rules, you will get the best advice from them.
Your stuck with it... 2 immigration offices will tell different and that might not be same as the Internet too.. And you can't argue with them. If your looking for logic, quick, smooth and easy.. Look elsewhere, your not getting it here.
Well I can tell you that when I wanted a visa I certainly didn't consult Facebook. The logical place to gain the correct information is the official Thai embassy website 👍
you can find it in official local immigration site. There is no conflict. Official guide lines are very clear. But the real problem with this is, every immigration office have own rules and can require what is not listed in official guide lines. And, every single immigration officer has own rules too. Guide line required A, but your immigration office can require A plus B or not A or C or D or E etc.. A local immigration office accepted A, but B local immigration office does not accept A, or C immigration office needs D. like this... That is why it looks like conflicted. But clear thing is to ask your immigration officer who you need to face. He is the rule and he is the guide line.
Young what you said! I applied for DTV in the first month of it being public. Did it myself through the Thai embassy in Australia even though I wasn't in Australia. Got it 5 days later and couldn't believe how easy it was. Providing you follow what's asked. Applied for my daughter a few days later and hers was even quicker. I'm 2 years into it now and the only drama I ever have is that my passport has been replaced and the DTV is linked to the old passport number. I travel a lot (international at least once a month) and I've never had a drama except for the passport/visa mismatch, but a smile and clear explanation and I've never been held or questioned more than 15secs.
Matthew Collier once it happens, it happens. There are thousands of winners of jack pot every day in the world. By now, you had no problem, but this does not mean you will not have problem in the future. But good for you! and good luck!
